I am having trouble setting up a sitemap for Wordpress. Error: The sitemap files could not be written. I have done everything (I think) to make it work per many suggestions: make blob root writable, create two new files, sitemap.xml & sitemap.zml.gz and make them writable. Any suggestions?

Hi Jerry

I had the same error when I followed the instructions and set the permissions to 666 (world writable). Once I set both sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz to 777 (world executable) and made sure the detected sitemap.xml was in the proper location, the error went away.

In the XML-Sitemap settings, scroll down until you see Location of your sitemap file. Verify the location and make sure the file name itself is in the box (sitemap.xml).

For the gzipped version, check the spelling (sitemap.xml.gz).

Hope that helps.

Jim,
Thanks. I rechecked, everything is set, as you mentioned, still doesn't work. I also contacted Blue Host; they suggested I get a different sitemap plugin.

It is possible that for some reason the sitemap generator will not work on the server you host on. The one I use is google-sitemap-generator. There is a new version at http://www.arnebrachhold.de/projects/wordpress-plugins/google-xml-sitemaps-generator/

You can also go through the list at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php?q=sitemap

There should be one that will work for you.
You did upgrade to WordPress 2.5, right?

That's the sitemap I'm trying to use. He has a link for Blue Host. It shouldn't be that difficult. I support accounting software, I know my way around computers. Sad

just thinking....I didn't do my original install manually, I used Frantastico, so haven’t upgraded as it looks like Fantastico will not be updatged any time soon. I wonder if that might be the problem?

I was using the Google sitemap plugin before updating, so that may or may not help. However, upgrading is recommended.

When I upgraded the first time, just overwriting the existing files, there were errors. So if you delete all files *except* those below and then upload the new files, the upgrade should go smooth.

Do Not Delete These:
.htaccess
fantversion.php (if present)
fantastico_fileslist.txt (if present)
wp-content folder (or anything in it)
wp-config.php
Any customized files.

Once the new files are in place, run the upgrade script, log into your WP Admin and check your plugins. Some might have to be updated or have their settings put in again (Post Email settings got wiped out). If a plugin stops working, deactivate it and activate it again. It should load the new settings.

Thanks Jim.

That is a good question and one that I have wondered about all open source software. For WordPress, each of the contributors has a link to their site where they can offer other items or services for a fee.

How WordPress themselves makes money is a mystery. I thought maybe it would be monetized by advertising on wordpress.com but I do not see ads on the blogs there.

Instead, I see that wordpress.com is run and hosted by Automattic.com, who offer "paid upgrades for advanced features such as domain hosting and extra storage".

Sometimes competing with free services is tough, until you look at what you get (and do not get). I have see other companies offer free services and when they got big enough, someone like Google or Yahoo came in and bought them for $millions.

Just to let you know, my sitemap works now! Thanks to Teli Adlam. There was a conflict with my settings:
http://site vs http://www.site

Thanks for letting us know, Jerry. Normally the site should work with or without the www. Glad you have it working now!
