I've been a long time NPC Newsletter reader, and take a lot of the stuff said in it seriously but some of it not so seriously.
I'm wondering if this was something to be taken seriously or not...
Back in October '03, Rosalind posted a shocking story of how GoDaddy accused her of being something NOBODY who makes a living on the 'net ever wants to be accused of... being a spammer.
http://netprofitstoday.com/_npc/2003-10-21.html#GoDaddy
In my opinion, that's like being accused of being a pedophile, because EVERYONE hates spammers just like EVERYONE hates people who abuse kids. Of course, GoDaddy was WRONG to accuse Rosalind, but to her credit, Rosalind said she took her business away from GoDaddy.
"Don't do business with those whose lack of knowledge and arrogance threatens your livelihood." -Rosalind (Oct 21 '03, NPC)
Fair enough.
Thing is... GoDaddy is the #1 company Rosalind recommends people like you and me use for hosting.
Huh? lol

It's time for an update on the GoDaddy saga! |

Oh Julie,
Wouldn't it be lovely if I had time to go back and re-read and update all my old articles?
I either need another assistant... (I'm working on that...) or another me - and I'm working on THAT too... another Hagen Daz bar please!
I forgave GoDaddy long ago, and now do all my domain registrations with them again.
Now, wouldn't it be lovely if I could build all the sites for the domains I register!! LOL.
Cheers,
Ros |

There's been a lot of talk here about GoDaddy and honestly I don't understand how they're so great. I have several clients who have their domains registered there and ask me for help getting through the maze of options on the bloated multiple menus. Not to mention the never-ending ads that are pushed in your face, or the technical support that only knows what's written on the screen.
That's why I pay a little more and get what I need for registrations and support. I once asked how I could get their expired domains list by keyword only, instead of the entire list every day. Within 24 hours they wrote a special program for me. The cost? Free. Who are they? DirectNIC
For hosting, I haven't found a host that can match the support provided by Host Gator. The last support ticket I submitted was completed in 7 minutes. Plus they're the only ones out of many we called, that answered with a live technician early on a Monday morning, without having to wade through an automated system.
Your mileage may vary.

Hi All,
Guess I like the convenience of having all my domain name registrations in one place, and the thought of transferring them all over to another registrar at this point would be one more thing to do... aargh!
I've never used their hosting, but the fact that they offer dedicated servers from $109.00 a month is pretty impressive. I've always spent at least twice that much.
I do recommend Steve's DataWebPro very highly though. His customer service is simply awesome.
Cheers,

So Ros, since were speaking of Webhosting, can you tell us where some of your sites are hosted?
Cheers

I have to agree with WebsiteManagers on the hosting admin side. I find their control panel to have limited features compared to other hosts I've used and the bloated pages full of ads is a real turn off for me. It's a pain in the butt if you need help on something too. In their defense, I'm sure their overhead is very high, and to maintain low prices they need to push their other services. Other than the lack of features in the control panel, their servers seem very stable & reliable and I haven't had any real serious issues to deal with. I moved a site from yahoo to goDaddy and got much better performance and stability. Overall, I'm happy with goDaddy, because I don't find the need to be in the control panel very often anyway.

GoDaddy's advertising is a little deceptive. I went to their site and saw one price for domain registration. I then left the site to search around for a promotional code so that I might get a discount on the registration. Apparently a picked up an affiliate cookie or somethig along the way, because when I returned to GoDaddy just 20 minutes after my first visit all of their prices had gone up by 10% or more.
I elected to register my domain elsewhere. I've gone with APlus... so far so good, although I am just parked there for the time being. |

| This isnt the first time I have heard of godaddy users being labelled spammers. Dont quote me on this but From I recall being said, it had something to do with the use of auto responders and complaints about them... yeah I think that was it |

I've been using GoDaddy's basic hosting package to host the Laundry Bag Store Online Site and it has some pro's and cons.
Cons: Their site is a little confusing as it has way too much crammed in on the home page. Their email client is rather poor. I have some emails fowarded to a Yahoo acccount and once in a while they don't arrive but this could be Yahoo as well.
I have a second domain registered and the first year I renewed it I made a manual payment from my paypal account but the second year it forced me to an automatic contract which I didn't like.
No file manager with my hosting package. (seems they add one to my package or I never saw it)
No toll free support.
The stats are lousy.
Pros:
The monthly fee is much lower compared to an eBay store, (I also have a Laundry Bag Store Online on eBay as well), a Prostore or a Yahoo store which are much more expensive.
The server uptime is excellent, never seen it ever down. (for LINUX)
The server loads the site fast. I've visited some Prostores and Yahoo Stores and they take forever to load, most the time I don't even wait.
Even though the stats aren't that good, there are other free and paid stats services so that is not a big deal. I use CuteFTP to upload the files and it is pretty easy. |

All -
While I don't recommend GoDaddy for hosting for most people, especially beginners (support issues,) it has become THE place for domain name registration.
Did you know that you can save money buying domain names from a GoDaddy owned company?
GoDaddy owns Wild West Domains, which is their reseller site. When resellers quit the resell program at Wild West, GoDaddy puts all the orphan customers in a reseller site they own called Domains Priced Right.
Right now you can buy a .com name there for $6.95. You don't have to be a reseller orphan lol to buy domains there. Here's the link (not an aff link)
http://www.domainspricedright.com
It always seems to be a buck lower than GoDaddy for new dotcom names.
Remember, it is a GoDaddy operation, just costs less.
I have most of my domains registered there. There is absolutely no difference in the service level vs. GoDaddy.
Just note that new GoDaddy features take a while to be integrated into the Domains Priced Right site.
As to hosting, I have a hosting account there, can't recommend it for most as the control panel is limited and stats are not great. My sites there are download storage and redirects primarily, so it works for me, but I have another reseller account elsewhere for most of my stand alone sites.
Hope this helps,
Lowell |

Hi all
I need to understand something. It might sound a bit dumb but I have to learn it anyways.
Is webhosting and domain registration the same thing? If I got a domain name but no webhosting, my site won't be online right? Then why offer domain name seperate from webhosting? Why not offer them in one package under one name?
Thanks
Kind Regards

Arzoo,
Buying a domain name doesn't mean you must have a web site. Domain names might be bought for future use, resale, etc.
Many web hosting companies offer domain registration services, but usually this is through a 3rd party resell or affiliate arrangement.
One big advantage of having your domain names separate from your web hosting is that in the event of problems with your host (it goes out of business, sells out, customer service issues, etc.) you can easily move to another host if the domain name isn't captive at the host.
Regards,
Lowell |
