I work at a newspaper. Years ago I setup us up with an online dating affiliate program. We run a three line class ad all the time and memebrship has grown wonderfully, as well as the profits! I show 'em how much we make in a year and they don't laugh anymore when I mention online dating. Our circulation is only 20k. More details on what we do:

Hi Kelly,

What a SMART way to get those 2nd tier affiliates working under you! Cool!

And yes, you're SO right. It's such a cheap and easy investment for a newspaper to make, that it's a wonder not everyone is doing it.

Have you ever considered using a press release to get more publications on board?

Just a thought.

Cheers,
Ros

I've not done a Press Release. Good Idea! I did a direct mail - tri-fold self mailer, spent about $600.00 and had zero response (bad list? I was targeting ad managers.) I posted once or twice to a couple eMail lists and had one inquiry but I never could "seal the deal" with them.

Hi Ros & Kelly,

I have taken a recent interest in press releases - and currently have a couple of things I would like to write up & submit (both online & off). Any suggestions, or resources you would recommend?

I believe I may give Jeff's new "Press Equalizer" a spin and see what kind of results I get with that. I'm anxious to see how well it works. I didnt know if you'd had a chance to tinker with it yet, yourself?

Hi All,

Yes, I'm planning to do a review of Jeff Alderson's "Press Equalizer" coming up right shortly. Was actually doing a little research for it today.

I have a friend in Ontario who runs a VERY successful Internet business, and the majority of her marketing is done through press releases... so I know exactly how effective they can be.

Anyway, I'll save that story for my review.

But in the meantime, if anyone is curious about Jeff's new software, it's listed in the Software section, under "Press Equalizer - Press Release Automator".

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Ros

Hi All,

I use press releases all the time to promote my sites.
Not are they only good for a spike in traffic and sales but they show up in the search engines pretty quickly. I've seen a press release appear in the results in as little as 3 or 4 days whereas it can take several weeks for site to get listed.

Also keep in mind when a SE displays the results from a search, they only display the first 20-30 words so get your most popular keyword(s) in the headline. The press release below is already showing up in Google for it's keyword.

Hi James,

I just read your release and after following a couple of links around Pr.com, there isn't a single clickable link back to your site.

Are you not allowed to input HTML into releases that you post with them?

Hi Ros,

Not on the free SILVER plan, but you can upgrade for $199.00 to the GOLD plan and get 5 clickable links, 1 to the site, 2 in press releases and 2 in the company profile.

I'd rather use the $$$ towards Google Adwords. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I figure those really interested will cut and paste the url.

Cheers,
James

Talk about bad lists, I used to sell shareware back in 1988-1991, (yes before Windows, the Internet and Email) and I'm still getting direct-mail addressed to that company.
