I'm a total newbie to affiliate marketing.
I read Ros's "Make a Fortune" book. Excellent resource, I couldn't put it down.
Anywho... being lazy (like Ros?) and HTML-challenged (not like Ros), I decided to go the Site Build It (SBI) route.
So far I've been learning a lot and getting both focused and excited, unti I came across this SBI philosophy today...
"As a general rule of thumb, don't try to monetize (make money) before you have at least 30 pages of content, are accepted into 2+ directories, and once you've started to receive 20+ vistors daily"
They instruct very strongly "don't apply to directories unitl you have 30 pgs of content" (presumably for fear you may delay your acceptance to the directories).
Also, "don't commercialize your site until accepted in directories".
Now again, I'm a total newbie, but I don't remember getting anything like that from Ros's book. Did I overlook something? Any experienced people out there please chime in...
Maybe I'm just so impatient (and so "bank account challenged?) that I think I need to get some money-making links on my site ASAP (too soon)?
Thanks in advance for any input... |

Ok, a closer look at Ros's book has led me to the answer.
While Ros encourages getting free directory listings if you can, she doesn't advocate delaying putting affiliate links on your site in an effort to make your site appear "non-commercial" to get a free listing.
As she indicates, this could backfire later if the directory realizes that your site "really is" a commercial site, and boots you out of the directory. I was kinda thinking the same thing, so I was glad to discover that I wasn't imagining things. |

Affiliates face many of the same challenges as regular retailers who have to compete with other retailers selling the same products for the same prices.
For affiliates, it can be worse. There's a saying online that "everyone is next door to you on the Net". Can you imagine trying to operate a retail store in a shopping strip where every other store is selling the same products as you?
That's effectively what search engines create.
But there's another important saying in marketing that's just as true (but very little-known)...
"The product you buy is NOT the same as the product you sell, even when your competition sells the same product at the same price as you."
In other words, it's up to YOU to attach more value, more perceived benefits, eliminate perceived risks and generally make buying from YOU safer, easier, better and smarter for the prospective buyer than either...
- buying from your competitor or
- not buying at all (that is, keeping their money!)
This is what is meant by PRE-SELLING in affiliate marketing.
It's NOT about getting your visitor to buy the merchant's product or service.
It's about getting them to buy from YOU!
Ros' sites are classic examples of this principle in action. And it's what Ken Evoy emphasizes at Site Sell. It's also what Allan Gardyne of AssociatePrograms.com has been saying since 1996/7.
Hope this helps.

John has some great advice here.
I don't think it's wrong to try to sell early on. You'll just find the results to be spotty (I'm guessing) until you've built some trust and built a relationship with your visitors.
At least that's what my experience has been thus far.
Good luck!

Affiliate marketing, and marketing in general, is about packaging and presentation...after finding a market for what you're selling of course
So...that's at least part of what John meant when he said what your buying isn't necessarily what your selling...even when others are selling the same thing.
The information being sold in information marketing is all the same...it's just being packaged and presented differently to hungry markets.
Ever wonder why, after buying an ebook or course...that so many say "Ahhh, that wasn't really anything new...but the book was good" in their reviews?
