I've been mulling over something for a while; it's about pseudonyms. I've used one on a blog before, but the blog was of a different nature from what I plan to do soon. One reason I would like to use one for my new site is so that I don't get mixed up with a relative who has the same first and last name as me.

For those who have used (or do use) pseudonyms, is there anything I need to be aware of as far as this goes? I already signed up for one affiliate program using my real name, but I'm not sure how this would work out if I set up a blog and begin posting product reviews under a pseudonym. I am looking into the "DBA" part - which I think would resolve this matter - but it will be a while before I can deal with the paperwork for that (I still have a full-time job and will not be able to take time off for about a month).

Hi Newcrusader -

I think (and of course insert the usual disclaimer - not an attorney - please consult a professional etc etc) - that it would depend upon how deep you use the pseudonym.

For instance, writing articles and blog posts is one thing but setting up a Paypal account using a pseudonym would be difficult because you'd then need a bank account with that name.

BUT you could do business in your name and then have a business name - so you could enroll in affiliate programs under the business name, post under a pseudonym and accept payments in the name of your business which (I think) would be perfectly legal.

The pinch comes when you set up a Paypal account in the name of the business but need a person's name and address to match for them. Then if one of your customers clicks the details button in paypal they see the name that matches your bank account.

BUT if you are only interested in SEO things - not getting confused with your family member - then using a pseudonym for writing would be easy to set up.

But getting into paperwork and DBA's sounds more like taking it to the next level.

OK - so in other words - I didn't help Laughing

Hope someone else has some words of wisdom!

Gail

This was what I was planning to do, at least for now.

I was considering that because of one book on how to become a freelance writer (I forget the title of the book). It was suggested that if one wanted to use a pseudonym to take that route.

My concern was that if I were to sign up for an affiliate program, and had to include my Web site address in the application, those who review the applications would go there and might take issue with the name of the author that's being displayed with the articles/posts. I could understand someone visiting a blog and saw "The Marketing Doctor" listed as the author of a post - an obvious pseudonym - but then sees a "John Smith" on another blog and believes it's a red flag: "hmmm, the name doesn't match with what's on the application".

Perhaps I'm making it more complicated than it needs to be by focusing on the "DBA" paperwork. . .

I wouldn't look at it that way. You did give me some relief, and you now have me searching for a couple of solutions. This is good. Thanks. Very Happy
