| Pls do not laugh. I've installed fantastico design template directly to my public url. Naive or clueless, i dunno. Maybe both. Luckily the webhost was able to help me reset my account - totally blank of which files to delete / set password etc... Come across any good book on how to build a web site from scratch? Or wld it be better for me to get xsitepro/dreamweaver then get a good book abt them and start designing from there? |

The public_html folder is the right one to put the template in. The one thing you do not want do is delete any of the original folders. They are all there for a purpose.
I never read a book on designing websites. I just looked around at other sites, hundreds (maybe thousands) of website templates, and chose a few to play with. I would put them on the site, one at a time and change them until I was happy - for a while. Then I changed it again.
That all got easier as time went on and I learned more about HTML codes and style sheets. It got a lot easier when I started building sites with WordPress blogs.
Everything is done online. When you create a page, it is automatically added to the menu and shown throughout the site. Creation and editing is done using an online editor. Because it has basic controls and the advanced ones are cumbersome, knowing some basic HTML helps a lot and is easy to implement.
If you are not using WordPress, but building with a regular site template instead, using NVU is a real time saver. Get it at http://www.nvu.com

Thanks Jim. Once Super Affiliate Handbook has arrived, I probably would be able to navigate better. But meantime, I tried getting started with WordPress and honestly it's not really userfriendly to non IT savvy though its blogging features are so well organised. Blogger's easier but I find that a-mere-blog can't really get me far.
So I hv to get back to the platform of building a website that includes blogging. I've tried PageWizard, Kompozer, NVU and even downloaded free website templates and still I can't get far. It's like there's some missing parts in all their tutorials for the abc beginners. Giving up is not within our vocab after reading what Ros's and many online success testimonies. Then I stumbled into drag-and-paste easy website building softwares. Mostly free, but might/will hv to host with them. VodaHost, Synthasite ... etc. So I really wld like to know the general pros/cons of using such drag-and-paste website building software. Their user-friendliness features per se seems to be a good choice for those who hardly hv time to learn the HTMLs. |

| Oh ya, one more thing Jim. I really do hope one day soon webmasters-having-to-fiddle-with-HTMLs will be part of the dinasours age and everybody get to build their websites without having to tinkle with HTMLs. We can leave that to the programmers. Just like how Blogger has made setting up blog so easy. With the easy site builder drag-and-paste now growing like mushrooms, we don't hv to waste so much time on the preliminary i.e. learning HTMLs, and get right into the main event i.e. start building site. That's why I was hoping not to spend too much time meddling into the 'HTML affairs' coz it's crippling my time efficiency. Do you think webmasters-having-to-fiddle-with-HTMLs will eventually become a thing of the past soon? |

There are some applications now that use drag-and-drop technology to make designing your site much easier. Take for instance the drastically improved WordPress 2.5. Using what they call Widgets, you can add items to your side panels and rearrange them, all by dragging them where you want them to be. The Widgets were available in previous versions, but improved handling in the newest version.

While you can arrange items in your blog with Widgets, there is no web-based form to tweak the style sheets. I predict that will come in the not-to-distant future.
There are HTML editors that allow you to do that now, just not online versions that do not require downloading and installing anything on your computer.
The style sheet was the most challenging of tweaking the layout on a new template I put in place yesterday. The rest was basically copy and paste code, such as a banner or Google AdSense code, putting it where I wanted it and uploading the file.
Another big improvement with WordPress was the addition of more options on the article & page editor. Now you no longer have to look in the page source to enter the H1, H2 heading tags. A drop-down menu has those items in it to be selected whenever you want.
So while there may still be some minor editing to the code, most of it is in the style sheets to make your blog look just right.
