I would like to create a social networking site that is niched to a career.
Can anyone recommend a good company to go with that will allow me to creat a social network with freedom. I would like to own the domain, manage it and have the freedom to monetize the network as I see fit.
Thanks A Billion,

Hi Rob
You want a hosting company that offers cPanel for complete website control, along with Fantastico that offers virtually point-an-click software installation. You also want plenty of storage space and bandwidth to accommodate growth.
For all the above and more, see my signature.

Are you building it from scratch or using a script, like Phpfox which is a myspace clone, or Pligg which is a digg clone. |

Hi Mike,
I do not even know. I will do what ever is the easiest to learn or get along with to start. What would you suggest?

Well in that case, what is it that you want to do? A social networking site is a little general. Do you want it to be like myspace or youtube? Do you think a forum would be enough? You don't have to write it out here, but you should get it down on paper for yourself.
You should also decide what niche the site will be in. That might help you answer what the site should look like and do.
From there, check out phpfox or other myspace clones. You can also get a freelancer from an outsourcing website like elance, getafreelancer, rentacoder, or guru to help you out. Search for forums on the topic of building social networks and forum moderation to get some tips.
If you want to make it really easier, but not that unique, some hosting companies offer free software for forums and such, such as simplemachines forums. |

You give me a lot to research on. I am wanting to create a social network for massage therapists. I am a student right now and will graduate next month. There a plenty of forums and individual groups or communities for massage therapists but from what I can find there are no social networks that are specific for massage therapists only. I am thinking of a network set up like MySpace that would allow massage school alumni to be a part of and stay connected with one another. Many schools have there own alumi association but there is no one social network on the web for massage school alumi. Is there a way you know of for me to use a MySpace type format on WordPress? Anyway, Thanks for all the great information. I will do some research on it further.
Thanks A Billion,

| Awesome. Check those out and look around for the best price for what you're looking to do. I know myspace clones can be around $300. Forums can be free but not as robust as a real social network site. I don't know if something like Linkedin would be better or not but you can try something like that too. Good luck! |

Here are some others that I came across. They are built into Fantastico which is inside cPanel.
XOOPS can be used as a personal weblog or journal. You can modules like News, Forum, Download, Web Links etc to form a community to interact with your members and visitors.
http://www.xoops.org/
PHP-Nuke has a plugin module named SNX-Nuke that turns it into a social networking site like MySpace. Cost: $120
