Hello!
I have a query which I hope someone can help with! I am wanting to download filezilla but don't know what to download as it's all Greek to me! I'm a little confused as to what to download. It will say 'Download FileZilla' which I click on, and then it takes me to the next page with 3 different packages...
FileZilla Client
FileZilla Client Unstable
FileZilla Server
I clicked on all three to get more detail, but, yep you guessed it, I got more confused.
If anyone can help, that'd be awesome!
Thanks in advance! |

If you just want to use it for downloading other software, you want the client.
If you want to allow others to download software from your computer, get the server.
If you are brave and do not mind if the program has a few bugs in it, providing the primary functions work and it has all the latest updates, get the unstable.
Hope that helps.

Hi!
Me again! I have another query... I'm at page 82 in the SAH, and I need to connect the filezilla to my site. On filezilla where is says Host...Username...Password and Port am I going through blue host or WP? I know it may seem obvious, but please keep in mind I know nothing about all this stuff and am learning as I go! I would say, think of me as a child but even children would know more about it than me!
Hope someone can help!
Thank you! |

Hello Kimberly
You will enter the information to connect with your site on blue host. That is probably where your WordPress blog is stored.
See, WordPress has no FTP login, only web-based. So when you upload files, you are actually connecting with Blue Host.
Hope that helps.

Hi Jim!
I'm just not sure what to put in host (ie do I put my web address, create another ftp user and put that address in there), where do I find the port? That sort of thing.
Thanks for helping me. I don't think I can say thanks enough!

You should be able to put your domain name in the host box. The port will be 21 and should already be there by default. If not, just enter it. That is the standard port fro FTP services.
Then put your username and password into the box that you got from Blue Host when they set up your account. Once those are in, try connecting. If there is a connection failure, you should see a message describing the problem. Otherwise, you will be able to transfer files.

Hello again!
I hope I can trouble you with one last question (for a least today!) Could you tell me what button to press to upload it! I thought I had and so I went into WP and clicked Presentation and it's now coming up as a 404 error. (i've almost got it, just not quite!)
Thanks again..

Oh boy....
I must've done something although I don't know what. I now cannot even access wp! Its coming up as
Not Found
The requested URL /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Any ideas?
Thank you |

The login page is usually just /wp-admin/wp-login.php
Is that there? Can you access the main page of your blog? If so, depending on the template you have on it, look for a category in the navigation bar named Meta. In that category is Register, Login, etc. Click the Login link to get to your admin panel.
If you still need help, send me a PM with a link to your blog and I will check it out.

Ok, there are two other ways to do this. The first is to go into your profile and put a link to your site in your signature.
The other way is to click the www button below this post. That will take you to my website where you can use the contact form.
We WILL gets this worked out for you. I have a training call in an hour though, so hopefully we can get through it before that.

Thank you Jim.
I've just sent a message through your site now. Feel free to re post anything from it (excluding the obvious!) to the board just in case anyone following this is in a similar boat!(not likely but you never know!)
Thanks again,

I received your email Kimberley. Then I downloaded and installed FileZilla. I put the domain name, username, password and port 21 in the boxes on top and clicked Quick Connect.
What I see now is 4 boxes, 2 on top and 2 on bottom.
The two on top are the folder structures. On the left is my local computer and on the right is the folders list on my website.
In the lower half, I have my local files on the left, showing the folder that I selected in the box directly above that. On the right are the files inside the folder I chose directly above that.
You asked about how to transfer files. Select any file or group of files on the left that you want to send to your site. Right click inside the blue highlighted area if multiple files are selected, or on a single file, and choose Upload from the popup menu.
You can also add them to a queue if you want to select multiple files and upload them all at once.
One thing I noticed is when I drag and drop a file and a folder is highlighted when doing that, the file will be placed into that folder.
So for instance, I want to drag and drop the index.html file from the server to my local computer. When I drag it over, a folder here is selected and upon releasing the mouse button, the index.html file is put into the selected folder, not in the main folder where I intended. So caution should be used here.
An alternative to that is to drag and drop the file from the lower pane to the folders list on top, diagonal from the files list, so it will go into your intended folder. I know, that sounds weird, but once you do it, all will become clear.
There are buttons on the top that you can use to alter the layout, making it just two panes instead of 4.
Now that you know how to transfer files, you should log in and navigate to the folder your blog is in. In your case, it will be the primary public folder, such as public_html.
Under that one is wp-content/themes which is where your new them will go. Just drag and drop the entire folder, not the individual files.
Once up there, log into your WP Admin, go to Presentation and click on your new theme to activate it.
When you are done with FileZilla, look on the menu and click Server, then disconnect.
Oh and great job on reinstalling WordPress! Now you will be dangerous! Have fun with it.
