Hi again Reedy,

Just an additional thought here: You referred to yourself as an "old carpenter". From this, I would assume (dangerous, I know) you have extensive knowledge & skills of the trade. Perhaps the best way for you to get your feet wet would be to start a WordPress or Blogger blog about carpentry.

With your background on the subject, I'm sure you would have plenty of unique content to write about, i.e. tips, tools, methods, project plans, etc. that would lend themselves well to multiple affiliation sales as well as your own written carpentry ebooks.

Since you can get either blog type started at no cost, you won't be out-of-pocket except for your time to write your content. Also, Google LOVES WordPress & Blogger, so it might not be a bad starting point.

All the best!

Good evening Grif,

Agreed; assumptions most often get us in trouble Smile, however in this case you’ve “hit the nail on the head”. Smile

I have deeply appreciate all your advice, the wisdom spoken with, would seem to come from one who has walked this path before. Shocked

Candidly speaking were I to pursue my passion, in my not yet created blog, it would become a warm and friendly environment where that recently divorced mother of 1 - ? children could come and find out how to repair that leaky sink, fix that cabinet door that doesn’t seem to want to close, find out why it is important to place the correct type backer board beneath that new tile floor she wants to tackle. Ect, Ect

I don’t really care whether she is divorced or has any children, just pointing out that it would bring great pleasure to know that I was helping some of the most vulnerable among us.

I once belonged to a Yahoo group about home repairs. However, I had to quite due to the exorbitant amount of time spent replying with “DETAILED” responses. Was taking much time and I was getting nothing in return except the satisfaction of knowing that others were being helped. That part would be ok if there were links that could produce an income as well.

I’ve been doing home repairs and remodeling since the early 70’s. Love to problem solve and brain storm with others who are interested in doing mundane to complex projects. Love to do drawings and allow the creative juices to flow.

The wisdom within your suggestions has struck a chord within me.

I will dig into what you have suggested.

Blessings to you and thanks for your concern and willingness to share yourself with another whose path has become overgrown with the thistles of confusion and indecision. Helping "this old carpenter" to see once again the clear blue skies of decisiveness and conviction.

It seems you have shown the light to this old carpenter.

Out of curiosity is there a better, best choice as to which option – WordPress or Blogger

I know Rosalind talks extensively about blogging in the new version of her book, perhaps reading this portion again would be time wisely spent.

In my initial reading of her blogging information the inclination had struck me to use that as the model spoken of in your earlier post. Just didn’t know why, except that I love to write and would like to write articles about varying subject matter. It would seem you have struck a vein; it may just have gold in it. The gold of knowledge of WHAT I can do. Thank you.

Enjoy immensely your feed back and encouraging suggestions. Another subject that would really be good and is needed is to be able to assist others to learn how to use the internet to make a living from their computer, I know Very Happy that is for a later date after I’ve learned how to do this myself. Shocked Very Happy

Greetings Reedy!

Glad to know I needn't be "hammered" Rolling Eyes with the definition of the word assume! Laughing

It sounds to me like you have a golden opportunity with your knowledge, background and talents. Apparently, you're not only a carpenter, by an artisan, which lends itself even better to your cause for the additional potential content your range of knowledge can provide. You state you love to do drawings: do you mean work related drafting of blueprints, schematics & diagrams, or freestyle art-type drawings, or both? (I am a jack of all these trades (except free-art), but not a master.)

My mind just spins with the possibilities of what your blog could do! Another plus is your writing style - (rotten for a squeeze page Wink but) EXCELLENT for a very personable blog. I think blogging to start out would suit you admirably, and that you could be quite successful with it. I won't ramble on here about all the possibilities. . . Shocked

As concerns the "best" blog software: I have only used Blogger, but it is my understanding that WordPress is much more robust & versatile and if I were to start blogging again, I would choose WordPress. You can make a WordPress blog as simple or complex as you want it, Blogger has it's limits.

That said, I have been hearing that many people have been having problems trying to migrate to the latest update to WordPress. Nothing insurmountable, but more problems than I have ever heard from WordPress users. Just a caution, and understand that the people having these issues are those trying to migrate up, not those who start with a fresh load of the latest version.

Let me know when you get rolling on this, I believe it will be one I would enjoy reading. Smile

p.s. Get this blog thing knocked out & you'll have a perfect method to promote for this:

Good Morning Griff,

First, my apologies, in looking again at your name it has only just now dawned on me that your name is spelled with two f’s.

Anyone admitting up front that “assumptions” are dangerous knows experientially the crevasse that can be fallen into. Shocked Very Happy:

Artisan, it is interesting, the choice of words you have chosen.

Thank you for the observation, although I’m not quite certain why that perception is one you have allowed me. It is none the less appreciated, for when one spends a great deal of time learning a craft he should want to be just that, an artisan, whether with his hand or mind or spirit.

Should there be a “mechanical artisan’s ” interest, sharing some of the drawings spoken of would be my delight. They are simple cadd drawings. The client we are presently working with wanted some custom mirror frames to match a cabinet purchased at one of the ‘big box” stores. I also did some custom crown – 3.5” crown – 3.5" molded base as apron – and a piece of base cap turned upside down as the 3rd piece and some 3 piece crown (3.5" molded base as header 3.5” crown and 3.5" molded base as an apron) turning the corners with a “bull nose”. (turning the outside corners with two 45 degree turns, thus giving these corners an elegant stately and an early American appearance.) Much of this work was free lance in that I was given artistic freedom to design and make suggestions.

While not architectural renderings, the drawings are sometimes quite detailed. An example is the Master Bedroom, this same client wants her master bedroom / bath to be separated by a wall with a door I am doing drawings depicting an elegant entrance having built up pilasters, column bases a double pediment and backer board for the column. I really enjoy designing things to fit within the existing aesthetics’.

Moving to something of greater significance.

In reading some of the earlier posts in another section I learned of your (accident / health) problem. There wasn't much elaboration so am not quite certain the nature of the problem.

Many of us who have “lived” life through tough times understand that much of “it” was ultimately for our benefit. Rarely does maturity happen except at or near the bench of adversity. Thankful it is am I that your time here on this ole terrestrial ball was not at its conclusion when this event occurred; for a richer, fuller life have I due to your influence and encouragement.

I am thankful for your distress; for the word picture you’ve drawn displays one of GREAT wealth; in having a son whose spirit is willing yielded toward his dad’s need showing brightly as the morning star because of this dilemma, and a wife whose love and care displays the character traits of mercy and forbearance; one who is a willing help-meet, allowing others to witness a love that is not forsaken.

You are indeed a blessed man, one who has much to be grateful and thankful for.

Yes, for even this “problem / challenge” that has been placed in your path.

I applaud your entire family unit. Bravo! It is indeed heart warming and of great encouragement seeing a family devoted to one another. It is the way it was, and is intended to be.

Back to the other issues: Shocked
I already appreciate deeply the time you have invested in my “dream” to move forward. However, it would be to my great delight and advantage to hear any of your brain storming or “ramblings” as you might be willing to share them.

When one would learn a craft, finding another whose heart is already applying itself to that same craft, could do little better than listening and learning. I am willing to listen and learn.

Perhaps there might even be a way we could be within one another’s circle of influence. Certainly I am within yours already. Exclamation Very Happy:

Regarding Wordpress vs Blogger, I too have heard similar stories, however as you have adeptly pointed out "beginning" with Wordpress will probably eliminate future problems. Moving forward with excellence, it only make wise sense and (cents) – pun intended – to begin at the best possible place.

Thank you again for your kind words, the gift of your friendship and the investment of your valuable time.

I’ve an antidote that portends toward you and your family

"Where integrity is found wanting, narcissistic mediocrity will always fill the vacuum left behind."

Thank you for being a person of integrity.

Respectfully,

your new "old carpenter" friend

Griff;

in honor of you and your reference to my name go here www.reedy.wordpress.com

there is nothing here yet but it is a start.

Will probably take a week or so to bend the "learning curve" so it straightens out a little but we are on the road, which is more than I've been able to do in the last several years. Shocked

YOU are a GREAT inspiration. I've got to go and do some real work so the fun part of life can be funded. Rolling Eyes Shocked Cool

I chose this name in honor of you - because of the 'nickname' you have given me. We'll see where it all leads. Very Happy Very Happy Surprised Surprised Shocked Shocked Laughing Laughing Rolling Eyes

There will probably be some very interesting conversation about how this blog's name came about and the manifold ways it can be tied back into the blog's purpose.

One of my prayer requests at church is for a "heat level" understanding of humility. Thank you for being a part of the answer to that request.

your new friend "Reedy" the old carpenter

Griff:

I've learned today that one cannot, according to the TOS on WordPress use their site to promote affiliate marketing. It seems a wise idea to move to Blogger. ???? Razz Shocked

Thought you might like to know.

INSOMNIACS TAKE NOTE: LONG POST AHEAD!

Hello again, ReedeR

Quote:

Boy, is my face red! Embarassed Please forgive my renaming you, it was certainly not intentional. I feel all the more badly about it as you have registered your domain using it. I would be happy to reimburse your domain registration fee because:

1. I did not mean to misspell your name, (by the way, 1 "f" in "Griff" doesn't bother me as the first "f" is silent anyway! Laughing Truth be known, I didn't even notice.)

2. Even more importantly, I should have conveyed to you previously that your domain name should also be given much forethought. It should contain keyword(s) related to the type of blog / site you are building for SEO purposes.

If you have a PayPal account, please PM me your details and the amount and I will happily refund your fee. If not PayPal, let me know what method is suitable to you.

Looks like the "assume" hammer nailed me anyway, since I failed to mention selecting an SEO friendly domain name! Shocked

Hey, ya can't do something like that for 30 years and not be good at it! I used to do drafting and Autocad, too. I still do some drafting for the projects I am doing on my bus.

Indeed, I am a VERY blessed man! I am not worthy of the gifts given me by my Creator, but I try my best to be found so.

I haven't elaborated as I don't believe in bemoaning to others what befalls me in this life & I don't want or need pity.

Thank everyone very much for your virtual cards & letters (and you all know who you are Wink), but let's get back to marketing! Thanks again.

At risk of the rath of long-winded post haters, I will simply state that any and every aspect of home repair has affiliation potential, i.e. tools and materials for framing (house & picture/mirror), plumbing, glazing, tiling, roofing, heating/cooling, appliances. . . You name it in home repair, and there are affiliate accounts to be had for them.

You could departmentalize your blog into the various occupational specialties required to wholly maintain a home thereby affording you the opportunity to attract business through many niches that blend very well together. There are all kinds of affiliate products, both physical and digital for this type of content. You could have a review section for various tools and equipment you have used or seen used in the course of your work. Start making a list of the various tools & products you have used. Do reviews on them, any product that you give a bad review for, provide your worthy (affiliated) recommendation for a substitute.

Once you figure out what products you want to be affiliated with and have some basic content on the blog, you can start building your "brand" by posting about some of the jobs you do presently and / or about past projects. (Write ebooks that go into the specific details of how they were done - see next sentence.) After building a rapport with your visitors, start offering free, regularly scheduled "Tip Sheets" to anyone who will sign up for them (starts building a mailing list for later when you are offering your own produts).

You are most certainly welcome, and thank you also for your kind words! I believe it was Rosalind's intent for this forum to be a help to others, and I hope I can do that in deference to those who have gone before and taught me to this point. I'll help anyone in any way I am able.

Looking forward to seeing your site go & grow!

Hi Reeder!

What their TOS is stating concerning advertising is against SP@M sites, not legitimate affiliate marketing sites. Here is a PERFECT example of a legitimate marketing WordPress blog: http://netprofitstoday.com/blog/ (Rosalind's own).

I hope that helps clear things up a little. Smile
