Hi all,
This post was made by Allan in the 'Meet and Greet' section and I thought it worthwhile to move here:
| Quote: | Hi, All I am sure you are aware that you have to be very weary about giving out your details online.
But it's that time of year that you should be very aware, just this morning I received a email from a company or person saying that I need to update my details with them the company was BARCLAY'S ONLINE.
Always remember they will contact you by letter first if they need to get intouch with you and not an email. |
Very good point!
Watch out for those phoney bank and PayPal emails!
A good way to judge whether or not it's phoney, is to cursor over the link. If it's a spoof, most times your email client will pop a message saying that the actual URL doesn't jibe with the one that is presented to you.
Regardless of whether you get those notices, don't ever click through those messages! OK, if you've just changed your password at PayPal, then you may get a confirmation email in a couple of minutes, but otherwise, all those things are spam.
Always type in the URL from your browser. If there is indeed a message there for you, that's great. If not, you'll be happy you didn't click.
Cheers,
Ros |

Good point! Would also add to be careful of any emails from people claiming to be from Wachovia. Be aware. They are a real financial institution, but as mentioned, no business will contact you via email for such an urgent issue as breaching security.
Looking forward to the day that these institutions take action and find these crooks. |

I learned a long time ago, that
if your bank or paypal emails you,
don't click a link!
Plain and simple.
If they did send you a message,
it should be in your profile as well.
Open a new browser window and type in the url.
Clicking the link is the easy way,
and 'spoofers' are counting on you taking the easy way.
MySpace is famous for this as well.
I've gotten messages from friends.
And when you click a link in those emails,
the spambot will capture your password when you login.
And then spam all the people in your contacts list.
So the cycle continues...
Also, with paypal or ebay, you should forward the entire email
to spoof-AT-paypal or spoof-AT-ebay.
They are pretty quick to reply (24 hrs or less)
And they will tell you weather it was it was or wasn't "SPOOF".
Then, they follow up and get the spammers shut down.
Hope my tid-bit helps!
Great subject Ros!
Brad. |
