I've always referred to forum traffic as
"trickle traffic".
Yes, it works,
but not as a primary traffic source.
However, I consider my "reputation" in
the communities I post in my reason to post,
not the traffic.
I learn from them, I contribute when I can,
and I enjoy the company.
This "footing" in your communities is powerful!
And should not be underestimated, OR under valued.

Signatures are not only used in forums or blogs, they are also a major component of any article that is written and submitted.
Submitted articles if they contain good solid information are propagated widely throughout the web gaining a lot of free advertising for any url that is included in the signature.
Signatures do work as a means of advertising and posting in forums is a great way to get people to know you, like you and trust you...three things that when in place make it more likely for anyone to purchase from you.
