have hostgator..now what!!

So I decided on hostgator and think it looks fabulous, but now Im lost. I transferred my domain name over to them, now what? I want to work on my webpage and thought I could do that through hostgator and that it would be easier that way, but I dont even know where to start! Any help??

Grab that phone and call 'em. Ask all the questions you need and/or want to know and they'll tell you. Just try not to babble hysterically.

I know some pretty sharp folks who loooove HostGator,
especially their customer service. I'm eying them myself for some future projects myself.

What's more, they have a really jumpin' forum where I'm sure there's plenty of folks ready and willing to help!

In your control panel,
you will see "Fantastico".
Go there, and scroll down
till you see this on the left:

Site Builders:
Soholaunch Pro Edition
Templates Express

I don't know the difference,
but I'm sure you can uninstall
if you don't like it.

Also, maybe someone else knows the diff.
I'd wait for another reply or two to see.
But that should get you started.

Now, I usually never recommend site builders.
Personally, I think they rob you of vital experiences.
So, I would also suggest becoming familiar with
a site builder like nvu.

One where you can see the html and preview the site.

Also, get to know about ftp .
I suggest smart ftp .

This will all become second nature quickly.

Ok..so I took the easy way out, at least for now, just to get my site up and running. I used yahoo and then copied the hmtl from there and pasted it into NVU and it worked! Im so happy! But..now how do I get it up and online? Geez, sorry for all the questions...I did upload it into the file manager in cpanel in public_hmtl, but it still isn't showing up in browser. Any ideas of what Im doing wrong? The one that shows up is one I tried doing in site studio and thought that program was not all that. Do I need to delete a file first?

Just check what your filenames are.

Only keep 1 index.something in your public_html!

You can use index.html if you have a normal webpage with no scripts (My guess is that you haven't used any!).

If you're scared of deleting wrong page, just rename everything called index.something to index1, index2 and so on.

Check your site to see that you have no homepage showing.

Then rename the pages called index+number back to index. one by one and see when the correct page show up.

Once you get the hang of it you'll get it right directly, no problem.

It sounds to me like you just needed to
understand a bit about folder structure.

Folders inside of folders.
index.html in every one.
(blank index in your images, or other private folders)
Each folder has a theme, or a reason.

This is kinda cool hearing the play by play

NO,I didnt used yahoo domain name, but I used the free geocities just to build my site (which requires no HTML) and then went into the file manager, copied the HTML from there and pasted it into NVU and it worked like a charm! Its at least a start for me!
Thanks for all the help..and yes, it is getting easier as I go...just keep hitting bumps, but as long as I can get over them!

Ok...I had the website up and then was trying to install a forum and now, when I type in my domain name, it comes up with this at the end... YaBB.pl and I thought that I uninstalled the YaBB forum and am using one that came with hostgator cpanel. How do I get that off my domain site?

YaBB.pl is a script file.
It sounds like your referencing to it in your html.
Probably left over from the install of the forum.

You need to look at the source code of the page,
and remove the line that includes YaBB.pl.

If you are installing and uninstalling,
it's a good idea to note the changes as they happen.
Use nvu to check it out, and get rid of the junk.
