After years of messing around with html, I got tired of designing and figuring out html/php/cgi codes (I'm no programmer, just a certified "script user")... I've spent a LOT of time on this.

So I decided to use drupal, a content management software, so that I don't have to upload my files, do only minimum html coding, I can just type online from any computer anywhere in the world! I call it an instant website!

For the newbies, you'll need a hosting service that supports PHP scripts. It'll be easier to install drupal if your hosting has "fantastico" button on it. My brother is setting up his own hosting service specifically for drupal sites, I think it's a great idea.

Oh yeah, did I mention drupal's free/open source?

Hi Pipsqueak,

That's SUCH great advice and precisely the direction I'm moving in with my sites.

It's like what I'm doing with Webmerge, but a significant step forward because you don't have to upload new pages... I love that!

Actually, I was just putting up another blog today (on Sage-Hearts.com as per my New Year's resolutions), and realized that Fantastico had a Dupral installation button as well.

What a great after-Christmas present that was, especially considering I had planned to buy it right after I get back from Affiliate Summit in January.

Phew! Smile

Thanks for mentioning that!

Cheers,
Ros

Does anyone know if this site (netprofitstoday.com) is done in WordPress? The source code doesn't say, but given Rosalind's preferences mentioned above...

Would anyone be willing to share a link for an exemplary site that is known to have been done in either WordPress or Drupal?

I found this discussion before wasting time comparing them all myself, so I've started comparing WordPress and Drupal. I've been looking at various sample sites for the two to see the basic "look & feel" as well as their specific uses for affiliate marketing.

Any more insights would be greatly appreciated!

Taking a quick look, the blog pages look like they're handled by WordPress (this appears in the head tag on the blog pages - meta name="generator" content="WordPress 1.5.2")

This BBS portion is handled by phpBB.

Just guessing the rest of the pages are static HTML.

I too have been looking at some of the CMS programs and have about decided on Joomla http://www.joomla.org which is also open source. (Translate FREE). The learning curve is a bit steep but I have been able to handle installation and customization pretty well so far. There are LOADS of addons, templates, and all kinds of help through forums. Developer help seems to be readily available and reasonably priced. There is even a site dedicated to Joomla jobs at www.joomlancers.com.

You can see a site I have been tinkering with (has sample content only) to see some of the features at http://www.zwebber.com . Next, I will install the Open Source shopping cart and play with it. Because there are different levels of "admin" this allows my clients to log in and upload product info, price, pics without fear of messing up the whole site. http://www.bellasperanza.com will be the first to test this on - it's perfect for them.

Seems a lot of sites are moving to this and we need to stay on the leading edge, right? Thanks for the motivation Roz!
