Steve, I teach my clients to use Manila. Manila is the best blog environment that I can find. Most features. Works great with Flickr and other tools. No blogger blars and you have complete layout control of your site such should you get to that level. Lots of cool templates available, also. Easy to drop in others. You can get started with a free trial site at http://www.clubhause.com
But first, you might need to learn some basic HTML. It's easy and takes about 40 minutes. http://www.cwru.edu/help/introHTML/toc.html
The Case Western tutorial is great because it includes quizzes where you can try out solutions and make mistakes until you get it right and you know what you are doing.

Cold, alone and shivering in a dark closet under a thin blanket. (not much different than my full time job.) I'd start with equations and trying to spell out words when the display is held upside down but I'd end up punching random numbers into my old TI calculator and babbling incoherently. and divorced. Or I'd make a run for Miami, steal a boat and head for the islands where I'd learn to dance to the rhythm of the steel drums and eat lots of bananas.
ok my question: whats the best marketing tip you've heard/used?

That you should consider SEO (search engine optimization) from the very beginning of your project - even before developing your website.
Originally, I did not - and I can tell you firsthand that it cost me a lot of time  . Of course now I do... and that was the best advice/tip I ever got! |

I don't know I was ever quite "filthy rich", but I was able to retire at 33 (because of the money I'd made in property investment) when my daughter, Pippy, was 6 months old.
I'd wanted to be in a position to retire by 35 since I was 17, and carried around a "retire at 35" goal card for over ten years! In the end, pretty much thanks to the UK housing boom, I hit the goal 2 years early.
Pippy is now 3 and a half, and Peter is now a year old.
One thing I discovered is that, actually, very small children can be terribly boring. Don't get me wrong, I'm VERY glad that I retired, and would never want to go back to the JOB.
However, over the past 3 years, I've ended up getting more and more involved in other projects, and among other things, now run a specialist software businesses that sells derivatives valuation software to hedge funds, and a multi-room audio installation company.
The good news about these businesses is that they keep me meeting interesting people.
What I have learnt however, is that hapiness is "moving towards a worthwhile goal", not actually achieving it.
Q: Written goals have certainly worked for me. Have you tried them? And if so, have they worked... or if not, why not? |

I personally would feel totally lost if I didn't always have a goal or ten on my plate to work towards.

What an appropriate question for this time of year!
I write my resolutions, goals or whatever you want to call them, down every year. I've found that when I didn't write them down, the plan never materialises and the goal is never achieved.
On the flip side, when they're written down, I get to where I want to be almost 100% of the time.
Question for the next person...

Yes!
I've always done a "written plan of action" which was my very casual version of a 'business plan', revised each year. It is very similar to what John Reese coined the "Brain Dump" - which I would recommend for ANYONE.
Actually, I was flattered when he published the Brain Dump idea, because it was so close to what I'd already been doing for years. It was nice to think I had been on the same frequency as the great John Reese

I plan to double my income... again.
I think that is one of the most challenging and fun goals that I have done. I started it a little over 2 years ago, first challenging myself to double my monthly income in 90 days. The challenge is to meet the income goal, and then keep it steady - and work up from there.
Other goals that I have are more general lifestyle goals. I am working on a "healthier me", better planning & organization, etc. |

Steve from Texas... you were asking for recommendations on website building software??? Well, I wouldn't have recommended it a year ago, but I'm now hooked... MS Front Page 2003..you'll have the software right on your computer to use over and over and over again, for as many websites as your lil heart desires... and it's compatible with all Website hosting services on the net (if they're worth their salt).
I HIGHLY recommend using Front Page with Lynne Robsons Website Templates... http://robsondesignworks.com/ (not affiliated link!)
Lynn has oodles of templates that are especially formatted to follow along from Rosalind Gardeners Super Affiliate Handbook, AND she offers a Website Development Guide that will show you everything you need to know about Front Page to build your website.
I'd never used Front Page before this, and I gotta tell ya... they are beautiful templates and Sooooo easy to work with in Front Page... like hand in glove... there is a little bit of a learning curve but if you're halfway intelligent (which it looks like you are)... then it will be easy as pie... apple pie... apple pie with ice cream!
Proof??? Have a peek at my website... for my topic, it's a pretty good looking site... loads fast... is trés easy to edit and adding content is like a dream.
(Hey, you'd think I was from Chicago - windy city... get it?? (everybody laughs) )
Now for my question: Mailing List Help...
Can anyone recomend a good utility that I can use on my website to gather subscribers for a newsletter, whereby I don't have to host the list on my computer. I need something with multiple list autoresponder capabalities, and any other goodies that would help me generate a large opt-in mailing list. I may consider managing the list from my computer once I get an upgrade... (out of Hard drive space and my motherboard is, well... you know "old"...shhhh... don't read that too loud, I don't wanna hurt her feelings...)

Super! Thank you for directing me to that link... I've gotten lots of info over the last year about newsletters and opt-in lists, but until a person is ready to actually USE the information, it just gets lost in the clutter.

Well, I signed up and have my first letter in there and am working on the content for the newsletters as we speak.
The first newsletter is going to be on Winter damage to your flower beds, etc. Don't know about the weather elswhere on the continent, but here in the Maritimes and elsewhere across Canada, we're going to have to take some intervention steps NOW to get those gardens protected a bit more.
Timely advice I think. I'm planning on have one really informative article for each weeks newsletter and the article itself will reside in the websites "Library". I'll direct my readers to the Library each and every week!
Soooooo.... Thank you again Ros... Aweber really is a nice utility... very user friendly. I think it will do the trick nicely!
