When you pick an affiliate, it is important that you determine which companies you will profit best from based on the frequency that the product is likely to sell. If you promote baby products to gardeners, you are almost guaranteed to not make a profit no matter how much money the affiliate company offers for a sale.

Lastly, there are two main ways to find an affiliate company for your niche website. You can sign up with a company that manages the accounts of hundreds of companies, big and small, and apply for the products within these accounts or you can do a web search for companies that would match well with your niche, visit their websites, and see if they advertise an affiliate program.

Great info Shane, and I totally agree. A product I sell on one of my sites, is much lower priced than the rest, so I get less commission on each one I sell. But, I sell far more of that product than I sell of the other ones on the site.

Seaching for smaller affiliate products is a great way to find unique products for your site. Although I do use some of the bigger managed programs, such as CJ, I manage to find more unique products by searching myself. The only problem is, on one of my sites, every time I feature a unique product, one of my competitors winds up featuring the same one a few days later. This is because they research my site, and find out where the link takes them, then sign up to the program. It is frustrating, because I would have thought they would want to sell different things to me, to make their site more unique.
