Hi all,
Just a quick question on expected conversion rates from a newsletter.
Assuming I build and maintain a good relationship with my list, presell and recommend relevant stuff that my list want etc. around what kind of conversion rates can I expect (sales, not just click throughs)?

Sorry, I know it's a beast of a question lol

I've seen people like Mike Filsaime say a 1% conversion rate is average in the IM industry (10 sales/1000 subscribers) and posts on Allan Gardyne's forum that say a 10-20% clickthrough and a 1-2% conversion of those is average (with 20% and 2% figures thats 4 sales/1000!)

I guess the point for my question is this...
is the 5% conversion rate I was setting my sights on possible when preselling to a targeted list...or am I just being blissfully naive again? : )

Many thanks,
-Mark

p.s. my niche aint anywhere near as competitive as i.m! lol

Mark - depending what you are selling you can get a pretty high conversion from a list. The best thing is, once people buy from you a first time, if you maintain a good relationship with them as many as 1 in 10 of them could make a second purchase from you. Many marketers will sell an extremely low priced item, making little or no profit on the first sale, as they know they will be able to sell a higher priced one to about 10% of the original purchasers. So, no, your 5% conversion rate is not impossible at all - it just takes time and patience, and if you have those, you'll beat 99% of the people out there anyway.

I'd say that the more niched and specialized your list and the content is, the higher your conversion rate can be.

I know people with lists of x hundreds of subscribers that have reached over 25-30% conversion of quite high ticket items.

On your average day anyone signup, no special content just keeping it alive list, a 1% is probably very good!

Also important to remeber is that the conversion rate depends not only on the list, the subscribers, your connection with them. You also have to consider the product/service you offer, the sales pitch and how many followup mailings you do for the sale.

There are so many variables that it is easy to just say that this or that list is good or bad.

There is no reason why you shouldn't strive for or achieve that mark, Mark. Smile

You really need to work it though. Then again, if that's all you have to work, then it's pretty fine work indeed.

Cheers,
Ros
