Hi there, Im a newbe to the affiliate game.
My question is-- is there forum etiquette?
I was on another forum at another site and someone asked about web hosting. Well it just so happened that I am affiliate of a web hosting site, so I posted the link.
I was told thanks for the great link - but not to post affiliate links.
If we are all in this to make a buck, why is this information bad? He got the info he wanted and I hopefully will get a commission.
Just trying to understand...

Welcome to the forum. Yes there are rules for etiquette, outlined in the first post on this forum.

In it there is a paragraph that states:
Quote:
Self-serving self-promotion won't work here. With the exception of the Announce Your Program category, please keep affiliate links restricted to your signature line.

Other forums have relaxed their rules about affiliate links and are now seeing the adverse effects of those. As a long-time member of this forum, I would not want to see that happen here. This is one place I can come to and share information without being inundated with affiliate links.

Yes all, or most of us, are affiliates for other companies. Many times multiple people here are affiliates for the same company. Imagine 5 or 10 people replying to a single post that asks for information about a product and all of them post their affiliate links, competing for that almighty click.

The bottom line is, if you provide good and honest information, people will click the link in your signature, whether you tell them to or not. If the information exchange is related to something in your signature, you most often will not even have to say, "See link in signature" because it will already show in your post.

Hope that helps.
