Hi Everyone,
I need your expertise in the area of uploading a webpage to a server.
I just upoloaded my site from Dreamweaver 8 via Smart FTP and despite having fiddled with it every which way, I cannot get the graphics to display. In an interesting twist, when I simply upload my entire web root site from my harddrive (as I expected I should do), the index.html page fails to display at the address (just folders and subfolders with my site contents).
When I upload just my index page, plus the other pages, plus my graphics folder containing all my graphics, the pages display fine and work fine along with all the links, but the graphics do not display at all or sometimes maybe a partial graphic will appear (oddly enough).
I realize the chances of someone here coming up with an absolute solution is slim BUT perhaps you can point me in the right direction in which to start searching for answers.
Thanks!
Best,
Melanie |

| It would make it easier to diagnose (you'll get better help, faster) if we knew what the website URL was. |

Actually, now that I've looked at the site more thoroughly, some of the graphics within the text are showing up and the bottom button bar graphics show up throughout the site.
Oddly, nothing else is making an appearance. Yet all the graphics are saved and organized the same way in the same place. (jpeg)
Any help you can throw my way would be great.
Thanks! |

Hi Melanie,
You seem to have more than one problem.
Fortunately, none of them are hard problems to handle.
I looked into your 'graphics' folder,
and found some possible problems.
(you should put a blank index.html in there btw or a redirect to your home page)
First, I found some images with conflicting file types.
You have 'buttonchocolatesflowers.jpg' listed as the source in your html,
but then you have 'buttonbarchocolateflowers.jpeg' in your graphics folder.
This might be a problem with more than just this image,
so you need to make sure all of your file types are the same.
.jpg when optimized right is the preferred web graphic.
Next, I found some with multiple extensions.
ie: 'plussizelingerieheader.jpg.jpeg'
I couldn't get any combination to work when I downloaded the graphic.
So you need to establish what file type it is, and re-upload it.
Some setting in your image editor might be adding the extra extention,
if it's set to save images as a default file type.
I always leave that automatic stuff turned off, I like chosing for myself
Lastly, some images that have the file type seemingly correct,
like 'rightbuttonbarbestplussizelingerie.jpg',
but still don't display correctly, might be due to the transfer type you used.
When you upload images, make sure you do so in binary.
Only use ASCII for code.
Other than that, I'd like to congratulate you.
Your site looks awesome!
Good luck, hope it helps.
Brad. |

It was so nice of you to troubleshoot my site! If I could give you a kiss, I would.
After playing around with your suggestions, I decided to double-check the amount of server space I had allocated to the site and it was set at 1 mg. I knew it was something dumb, but I DID clean up some of my graphic file names and stuff.
I swear, I think giving birth is easier than this stuff.
Here's the site in all its glory: www.plus-size-lingerie-boutique.com
Cheers!

| Melanie, your site looks great and has lots of appeal. I think you need to have a newsletter. |

Yes, a newsletter is on my list of things to do next. I'm learning Dreamweaver and only briefly scanned the appropriate section...and I'm also considering the newsletter service Rosalind recommends as well. I *just* added real affililate links to my plus size lingerie section (the prevous ones we filler links until I got accepted to the programs) and I still have to replace the links in the other categories.
Thanks for the compliment! I'm hoping that building a site will be easier next time around.
Best,
Melanie |
