Video: The Lighter Side of Blog Comment Spam Moderation |
I found 265 spam comments in my blog’s comment moderation queue this afternoon. This video shows how I actually do filter through mountains of spam looking for valid comments that go astray and get mistaken as spam.
And although it seems like I’m scrolling through the list pretty quickly, the video (or running Camtasia) seems to slow my scroll rate down by about 20%. So imagine it happening that much faster.

Hi Rosalind,
Why don’t you install reCAPTCHA plugin, greatly reduce spam on my website!
BTW, I am looking forwards to your next update of your ebook - Super Affiliate hand book, and I love your work!

Hi Kok Choon,
That would kill all the fun!
You’re right though and while I have it on other blogs, I just didn’t install it here. However, as you can see, I’ve just installed it on NPT. Thanks for the reminder!
Cheers,
Ros

Hi Rosalind, I admit that I comment on blogs to obtain backlinks but at the same time I have my rules. The most important only leave a comment on a blog if it is relevant and adds something of interest to the blog post. If I can not think up something that other readers of the blog will find interesting I refrain form commenting. Blog commenting for backlinks must be a win win for the commenter as well as the blog owner. Almost forgot I don’t pay anyone to post comments for me as how can they be quality posts!

Rosalind,
I noticed that you now use captcha. Hope you don’t have a lot of those spam anymore.
A few suggestions for you, in case you haven’t already know, or at least this could be useful for your readers.
You may want to take a look at
Akismet Auntie Spam and WordPress Comment Ninja.
Both are greasemonkey scripts for Firefox. The former will group same comments from the same IP and display only the first line so you may go through the comments much faster.
The latter lets you respond to the comment in the admin interface, email the sender, and some other neat features.

I have been in the same boat. For my blog, Akismet makes sure it brands every other valid comment as spam. It totally defeats the purpose.
