OMG, I’m connected to the Internet! Hurray!!!!
Imagine being an Internet marketer at an affiliate marketing conference and not having an Internet connection from your hotel room for 5 days.
Are you feeling my pain? 
Yup, despite paying $12.95 twice and $9.95 once, the Lodgenet service at the Rio was pathetic.
Despite spending more than an hour on the phone with Lodgenet and having the ticket escalated to Level 3, the connection speed was never more than 2Kbps. I even changed rooms hoping to access the wireless that some folks reporting picking up, but I had no such luck.
Fortunately, Twitter is a light load, so I logged on a couple of times to tweet, but the connection was never sufficient to log into the Administration panel of my blog.
UGH.
Anyway, now at McCarran International Airport with 5-bar FREE wireless and dancing for joy at having just uploaded my Affiliate Summit West ‘09 conference pictures.
Woohoo!

I was in Hawaii a couple weeks ago (Waikiki Beach Marriott) and I had similar issues. My first time taking my laptop on a trip and the internet cost $13 a day for basically dialup speeds. A buddy of mine said he is used to paying $2 per day.
But, I ended up hooking the laptop to the wired network cable and the speeds were still slow, but not super slow. A lot of hotels have network cables stowed away in the correspondence desk.
I ended up paying about $100 extra for internet access I could barely use. All the more reason to consider travel and IM events a vacation from the internet I guess…

I like your attitude… one which I finally had to adopt after changing rooms and still having no Internet connection.
Honestly, it wasn’t hard to take the vacation. It’s just difficult when the workload doubles or triples as we try to make up for lost time.

Hi Rosalind: Like you, I am tired of my 30 year career and needed a change, so I bought your book and due to lack of computer skills found it hard to follow. Paid for an online newbie course that just told me what I needed and where to get it. So I bought the book course from IMC Vancouver, which you are an affiliate of so I have a site, ebook and articles, but still no traffic and I really wanted to do an affiliate business. Bosco (Anthony) Pierra says he knows you and maybe you could give me some direction. I am so frustrated with the get rich under a month products. It becomes too confusing who to trust and what will really work.

Yes, sometimes it’s more difficult to work with written instructions in a book when one is skills-challenged compared with seeing them in video tutorials. That’s coming.
A quick peek at your site and I see that you’ve been working hard on it.. It would seem that your only challenge now remains some basic design and layout work, all of which will be covered in my upcoming coaching sessions.

I am amazed at the number of people I heard complaining about terrible Internet access at Affiliate Summit. Given the amount of money some affiliates are making, I can’t believe that they don’t just shell out the $30-60/month to buy a wireless service with their cellular providers. I pay $60/month and I get essentially unlimited high-speed (well, sometimes I’d call it high-speed) access pretty much anywhere Verizon covers, so I don’t think twice about access fees or availability when I travel.
I understand why foreign affiliates may have issues with something like that here in the US, but I can’t get over how cheap some US affiliates are about their web access when it’s such a crucial component of their lifestyle.

You’re absolutely right. The Verizon users were indeed happy with their connections.
However, regardless of how much money I earn on an annual basis, paying $720 for a service that I might use only once or twice in the year is wasteful – especially when most of the hotels that I stay at when I’m not traveling on business provide free and fast Internet. And as you suggested, Verizon is problematic for Canadians in that we can’t order it from here, so you have to be down in the States to top up when required.
Call me cheap or whatever, but I believe that capital preservation and avoidance of unnecessary spending are the first steps to being financially free. The Millionaire Mind by Dr. Thomas J. Stanley is a great reference for this approach.
I suppose it’s up to each of us to determine just how ‘crucial’ Internet access is… or whether or not there’s a Starbuck’s within easy reach.

That would really be frustrating. I don’t trust hotel internet connections anymore and just use a national service when traveling.

Isn’t it funny that when you PAY for Internet at hotels you get the stinkiest connection, but the CHEAP and FREE places have lightning fast access? I have had the best luck with Internet at the Holiday Inn of all places!

I agree with you. On road trips I usually choose the Holiday Inn specifically because their Internet connections are always both free and fast.
And for anyone who hasn’t stayed at a Holiday Inn lately and may think it beneath their usual standars, I stayed at the one in Astoria, Oregon in September and the riverside room was absolutely lovely and very comfortable.
Now, if only they would stop tempting me with the biscuits and gravy (heart attach on a plate)!!
