Saying Goodbye to the Old Sony VAIO

Since security at Toronto International Airport killed my Sony VAIO last Christmas and I determined that the repairs would cost more than both the original computer or a replacement, the old laptop has been languishing in its shipping box under my desk.

Well, during the fall version of the ’spring cleaning’ around the house, I decided that it had to go — but not before Ed rendered it completely useless to anyone inclined to pry.

Ergo, he had some fun removing the keyboard and degaussing the hard drive (destroying the data) last Saturday night.

VAIO SZ Series Notebook VGN-SZ650N/CI carved an ‘X’ into the 10.4″ screen with a screwdriver.

Aaaaagh! What a BAD BAD feeling that gave me, despite the fact that the old thing had been dead for almost a year, and although I actually prefer the VAIO SZ replacement that I bought.

The new VAIO has a much larger screen and keyboard that I can actually see and use. Using the tiny little keyboard on the old one was not fun at the best of times, and I therefore didn’t get much work done while I was on the road — other than to send really, really SHORT email responses — and only when absolutely necessary.

Anyway, we marked its departure with bags of Cheesies from the Halloween cache (see pic upper right) and went upstairs to survey the aging desktops.

Muhahaha… :-)

Wow that is painful to watch. I type on a new VAIO as I “speak”. Love them!

Pity about the screen - unless it was busted too, you might have fetched a few bucks for it on ebay. Often people will buy the whole computer on auction sites for a decent penny - even if advertised as broken and the hard drive is gone… (which you *should* sledgehammer).

Hi Tommy,

Hmmm.. food for thought for the next one, indeed. Although we did sledgehammer the HD before it hit the trash the next day. :-)
