Outting Myself

If you were looking for juicy gossip, sorry to disappoint. I’m not ‘outting‘ myelf that way! I really do like guys. :-)

Actually, I decided to come clean after reading Anik Singal’s (Affiliate Classroom) newsletter titled “My “Slap-In-The-Face” Advice For 2007…” in which he detailed how a couple of mistakes cost him over $120,000 last year.

Well, yes, I TOO made a huge error that cost me in the neighbourhood of $20,000 over a period of 3 months near the end of the year. (What a BUMMER… that money could have bought 2 really nice vacations.) Anyway, what happened was…

I was making some really nice Adsense coin from an affiliate site on which I was no longer trying to sell products. I marvelled at the site’s traffic considering I was doing NOTHING to promote it… Or, at least, that’s what I thought until one day when I had a little time to spare, I took a long hard look through one of my PPC accounts.

YIKES!!

It turned out that I WAS still advertising the site and through the engine’s content network, no less.

AAARGH! I put a quick stop to that!

OK, I’m not telling you this to whine or complain. Obviously if I can go 20K in the hole on one site over the course of 3 months without even noticing, the overall earnings picture is pretty darned good around here.

The point is that I was stretched too thin to be able to pay proper attention to everything that was happening with my business.

So, the lesson sinks in deeper. This year I’ll definitely go back to my old ways and follow John Reese’s teaching about pursue multiple streams of revenue from fewer niches - as opposed to multiple streams income from several sites - more closely.

Rosalind,

Your point at the end of your blog entry about focusing on fewer projects is something I’m trying to do. I’m all over the place like a chicken without a head!

In 2007, I really want to focus on ClickBank because they’re easy to sell things through, and you can easily promote stuff through them too…

To that end, may I ask, what percentage of your earnings come from ClickBank? 10%? 30%? More? I have read some people say not to trust ClickBank with too big a percentage of ones business, but I trust your opinion on this, and so am curious what percentage (more or less) of your earnings come from ClickBank.

BTW: I loved the Super Affiliate Handbook!

Indeed running the online business alone or with few people is not easy to handle. I guess we do make mistakes at time but we will learn from it. :)

Larry, I’m glad you liked the Super Affiliate Handbook.

Regarding the percentage of my earnings from Clickbank… hmmmm… off the top of my head I guess it would be around 20 - 25%, and then too there’s a split between affiliate sales and book sales.

John - and I seem to be one of those people who has to learn the lesson several times over. :-)

Hi Ros,

I think most of us have a habit of committing to one project or one JV too many and I’m sure as a former air traffic controller, you’d be familiar with plans going off their flight path, but still managing to reach their destination.

Part of what makes us human and sociable is our varied interest which gives us impetus to test out new projects and is sometimes responsible for getting us sidetracked.

The key is to get back on-track and pick up the lessons learned. More importantly, to isolate the lessons learned, plug the revenue leakage.

I have to admit it’ll be a pretty interesting anecdote to go into your next book.

And I bet, in the long run, it might net you much more than just $20,000.

Call it ‘experience leverage’.
