I Got a First Page Google Listing in Only 9 Seconds

Written by Rosalind Gardner

Despite continuing problems with getting my blog posts to show up or stay listed in Technorati and Google Blogs, it appears that at least one of Google’s spiders still loves me.

Immediately after I posted “A 9K Walk Along Icey Roads in Rohdes” to our Roamsters travel blog, I searched Google for the keyword phrase that I was targeting - Rohde boots - and was delighted to see that the post showed up in the 8th spot on the first page of returns (see the screen capture below).

Although I’ve seen posts get listed that quickly before, many also seem to disappear from Google’s results almost as fast, so I searched for the keyphrase again this morning, and much to my amazement, it is still there.

Granted, Rohde boots isn’t a particularly popular search term. According to Wordtracker, the phrase has a predicted count of only 12 for today. Furthermore, I haven’t found an affiliate program that sells Rohdes.

So, why would I bother to target the phrase ‘Rohde boots’ if so few people are looking for them and I don’t make any money promoting them to people who find the post?

Well, my primary motivation for writing such a post is to share information about a truly great product that will benefit walkers like myself. In return, I hope to earn new feed subscribers with the invitation “If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!” that appears at the end of every post.

Furthermore, the site is monetized in many ways. Those who appreciate the information may browse around and find other products of interest to them that are sold through an affiliate program. Or, they may leave the site through a Google Adsense ad for which I get paid.

Assuming I get only 1 click per day from that listing over the period of a year, that would be 365 visitors to my site — for free — from a post that took me only 10 minutes to write. If only 10% of those visitors sign up for my feed / newsletter, that would be 36 new subscribers to whom I can promote products on a continuing basis. Now, if you write a post like that once a week, you can multiply those results by 52, and estimate nearly 19,000 visitors and 1900 new feed subscribers — for free.

But, those traffic estimates are probably low, especially considering the personal nature of the blog post title and content description that appears on Google, which is in striking contrast to the ’salesy’ nature of the other listings that appear on the first page of Google results.

For example, inthe last 23 hours, my most recent first page listing has generated 4 site visits, or 33% of the estimated traffic for the term ‘Rohde boots’.

So, imagine how much free traffic and revenue you can generate by targeting those ‘less popular’ phrases if you post to your blog 3 or 4 days a week, or better yet, every day!

Great post covering so much in so few words - speed of indexing in a web 2.0 era and thinking beyond the specific affiliate program itself. Thanks!

Hi Rosalind - that was record speed fast. And looking at the math you’ve done, it certainly does sound like it would be profitable to aim for the less competitive keywords.

This post is also a brilliant reminder that now I have google reader, I need to add the roamsters blog to it. Catherine

Most people that are new to marketing online don’t understand this concept of grabbing as much “low hanging fruit” as possible and won’t do it because of the amount of work involved and the time that they have to wait to be rewarded for their efforts.

I have some articles and web pages that have been in place for months now driving traffic for just for a half hour of work.

    Great info Ros (as usual)!

  4. Rosalind, I’ve been following your work for a while and I love your attention to detail. This was a great post that definitly will help my pocket. Thanks..

  5. Great post Rosalind

one of my strategies is to mix between those kind of search phrases that have less searches but also less or often zero competition and those with high search volume.
Blogging is so flexible and it takes just minutes (after a quick research) to write a post and pick some new visitors.

    Keep up your great postings
and all the best for 2008

I don’t have a website yet. I had one, but my computer went down. I’m starting over. Your book is read and I’m working on a better format. Thank you.

From my experience as a writer on Writing.com and Helium.com, my feelings on the subject are that content has a lot to do with it. If it’s very original, bubbling with your own personality and has a keyword in the heading, subheading or first paragraph, it will get on Google, not always Yahoo, and sometimes AOL. Make friends with a celebrity. I wrote in my URL and went to a celebrity’s page, advertising something of his.

Keep up the good work. Happy New Year.

  7. Good post Rosalind, very interesting.
The quickest that sometime Google have index my post is 20 minutes, but you have resume very well all the parameters.
    Thanks.

    SoftMoc at CJ

  9. Hi Judith - Interesting that you should say that. The Canadian version of Softmoc comes up on a search for ‘rohde boots’ and yet when you’re in their site, the result is “We’re sorry, but no items matched the search you requested.” Too, Rohde doesn’t come up when you do a product search on CJ. So, I’m still hunting for an affiliate program.

    Cheers,

  10. If you changed the title (just the one that shows up in the title tag) “Rohdes boots - A 9K Walk Along Icey Roads ” you will move up in those rankings. In WordPress this can be accomplished by using the SEO Title Tag plugin, which allows you to create a title for your post and a separate SEO’d title which shows up in your title tags. Which, as you know are given high prominence by search engine ranking formulas.

Wow, Rosalind, I thought I was doing good at a few hours but 9 seconds is smokin’. I like what you said about giving your readers good information to read and not worrying about selling them something immediately.

This has been my business model since I started online almost six years ago and it works well for me also. I get a lot of repeat visitors who trust me and trust my product recommendations and eventually purchase something through my affiliate link.

I’ll have to work on getting my blog posts indexed in 9 seconds and I think that is quite an accomplishment.

    Hi Rosalind,
Great post. I had a similar experience that ended up in having many thousands of visitors to one of my blogs over a year. The post since has been picked up by the consumerist.com which resulted in a flood tide of traffic almost instantly. It has since tapered off but I can still account for over 500 visitors per month to this blog just from one post I made. The funny thing is that I originally made this post for the benefit of some of my real estate customers who had really bad financial habits.
The main difference is that I was picked up by MSN and Yahoo and have never received a page one from Google for the keyword yet.
What ultimately created all the traffic in the long run was that I was offering a useful free download. But it all started very similarly to your experience.

(The sad thing is that I have been a complete dolt in effectively monetizing this traffic. Since reading your blog and being a part of PPC Classroom I’m going to be fixing this!)

I have also experienced this one a much smaller scale with other non-competitive keywords that echos your experience exactly. The reality is that the aggregated volume of traffic can be significant from a handful of non-competitive keywords.

I never realized getting traffic could be this simple. It seems impossible at first but it is happening. B.t.w, does anyone know if google prefers blogs on the blogger or wordpress platforms?

  14. I resisted blogging for a long time but I have realized how powerful it can be.

I started my bestretirementquotes.blogspot.com to link to and promote my new website retirement-quotes.com and hope to get the website to the top fold on page 1 on Google for the search term “retirement quotes.”

After two months, the website is still around the 95th entry on the 10th page in a search on google for “retirement quotes” but the blog is the 7th (sometimes 6th) entry on page 1 (out of 244,000 webpages for this search term) on Google. It will be interesting if I can get to the top three with the blog (or the new website). I already have another webpage from an older website in the number 2 position but would like to dominate with 2 of my websites or blogs in the top 3 positions.

In my experience (5 blogs and numerous set up for friends and clients) I think that WordPress works especially well over other blogging platforms. The way that WP lays out its content is extremely friendly to the search engines. There are also a few really good SEO friendlier themes out there for WordPress. Do a search for “SEO friendly wordpress themes”. I use the cutline theme.

There is also way more flexibility with what you can do with WP especially if you’re hosting your own version verses other platforms.

BlueHost’s hosting plan has a tool called Fantastico in it’s admin area that will automatically set you up with the latest version of WP so you don’t even have to upload the WP files to your server. (although you’ll need to upload your own themes and plug-ins)
Rosalind has a banner on this site for BlueHost you can click on to set up an account. Really affordable.

I have been trying to post some information about myself and questions that I have on your Forum, but I am having a very difficult time with registration. I get passed the Username and Password portion, but it is the “code word” portion that is giving me difficulty. I have exhauasted my 3 tries, received a message to try again later. I would like to get my post information to you on your Forum now. I am happy to leave you with my Username and Password and possibly get someone in your support group to accomplish this for me, but I am not sure if you want this type of information — Username/Password — displayed in this type of a message to you. I think I am registered with your Blog, but I have never received an e-mail confirming this as specified in a message that I would be receiving a confirmation e-mail. I really want to get through this portion of my registration with your NPT affiliate program. Thank you.
