It's shocking how often these rules get broken, and frequently by large companies. They clearly don't understand the long term damage they are doing to themselves. I'm sure we all have a shortlist of companies we will NEVER work with again (I know I do!). Affiliates have long memories, and like being treated as a partner, not a short term convenience.

I covered some other areas in which merchants need to play wiser in my article
9 Reasons Your Affiliates Do Not Trust You
And How To Fix Them Fast,

Well, you've finally done it, Rosalind! You're giving me the answers before I even research the questions! ;)

I was just thinking of the subject of leakage today, after checking out a product I wanted to promote and noticing the huge, highlighted "become an affiliate" box detracting potential customer away from buying through my Clickbank hoplink and signing up directly.

A small tab at the bottom, one sort of expects. But overt affiliate signup promotion doesn't seem worth the effort.

Thanks for a really informative post - as always.

Hi Ros,
Met you in Vegas a couple of years ago at PPC Classroom Live. My wife and I were very impressed with your abilities and your ethics back then and still are to this day.

Folks this is a smart lady worth listening to.

Yes I always hate seeing a big "AFFILIATES CLICK HERE" button on the page I am promoting. Very counterproductive for US...not them. As you say if we all choose not to promote sites like that it would help. Myself I just let it become one factor of many.

Thanks for the great info as always.

Rosalind,

As usual, exceptional information. Thanks bringing clarity to the murky field of selecting affiliate programs.

You have certainly helped this mere mortal affiliate on her way to superdom!

Another thing I find irritating is when you do send traffic to an affiliate site, they sign up and then they start getting emails without your link in it and hard copy brochures through the post with offers of discounts if they use a url specifically for them - I have had 2 recently where I've discontinued the relationship.

Hey Ros!
A question..
The new FCC ruling on anyone promoting/selling products, and compliance
in telling visitors that you make $$$ promoting said products?

Have you seenanything on this?

Thanks for the information packed post today Ros! As a product owner who would love to attract super-affiliates I sure appreciate you sharing this advice with me today.

I've heard a recent discussion about how super-affiliates will not promote a sales page that has a link to join the affiliate program somewhere on that page. What are your thoughts on that?

I took down my opt-in boxes from my sales page a year ago at the request of a super-affiliate and it has paid off for me.

I recently added an Honeste trust guard seal to my sales pages, but I don't yet have enough data to see if it's made much of a difference with conversions.

There always seems to be a concern when using Clickbank about affiliates losing the sale because the person entered their own clickbank id before making the purchase. Do you have a post on your site on this topic as well as the topic of what is best... 1st or last cookie gets the sale.

Thanks again for the tips Ros.

Great post.. I couldn't agree anymore with you. Regarding phone sale, yes, I always try to avoid redirection to the pages where Merchant ask customer to book online or call some number.

Personally, I would redirect them to the page where they can read and make a purchase but in some cases affiliate might have to land on the page where they have offline contact detail. For Example on my blog under Miami Vacation Home Rental category, visitor gets an option to contact owner through e-mail & phone from Merchant's product page - that's a possible NON AVOIDABLE traffic leak. But, still I get some incentive whenever Vacationer submits an email inquiry to one of property owners using the Contact Owner tab.

So, overall good offer. Just trying to convey message that in some case, even with some traffic leak you can select Merchant by considering the demand of the product based on geo-location.

Completely agree.

Traffic/commission theft is always going to be a hurdle to lure in a SA. They only give you one chance and if they ever learn their commissions or traffic is being taken, they will drop you really fast as there are literally millions of programs to join out there.

Best to always be in regular communication with them and work with them aggressively on exclusive offers, etc - things that get them sitting up and taking notice.

These guys rake in obscene amounts of money every single day so going that extra step will utlimately be benficial for all.
