Have You Tried One Click Installer?
The OneClick installer is perfect if you want to save time downloading and extracting zipped plugin or theme files then uploading them to your Wordpress blog via FTP.
After you’ve installed and activated OneClick, you’ll be able to automatically install plugins from either their zip file on your hard drive or directly from the zipped file’s URL.
In Wordpress 2.5.1, you access OneClick from the Dashboard. After installing a plugin, all that’s left for you to do is activate it.
OneClick has a plethora of features, all outlined in the Wordpress Plugin Directory information for OneClick. That page also includes a download link for the plugin.
The only problem I experienced with the plugin was not being able to delete one of the plugins (via either FTP or cPanel) that I’d installed with OneClick.
Turns out that had I bothered to read the instructions, I wouldn’t have had to bug Steve, as there’s a fix for that too. It’s called the purgatory module, and is included with the plugin.
The OneClick installer might be the LAST plugin that you ever download, extract and then upload to your wp-content folder, and that’s a GOOD thing.

Very good hunting Rosalind,
Matter of fact, I have a hard time uploading plug-ins, and placing them properly.
Case in point is the BlogRush widget on my blog, which is covering up the categories directory, archives and the blogroll.
I have petitioned support at blogrush a number of times, for advice on how to uninstall and REinstall it properly, and thus far not even a kind word from them.
Please Rosalind, could you kindly help via an article or a link to a page that explains How to properly place Visible plug-ins on Wordpress exactly where one wants them placed.
Any assistance from you is very much appreciated.
I am alice

Hi Rosalind,
I have been receiving your newsletter for a couple of months now and I just wanted to say thank you for the tips.
Also, on your response to Ken Evoy, it was helpful. I think the world of the guy but some times I do wonder at his particular slant on topics and in this case I found you to be the expressive counter to his arguement against blogging.
Again Thanks!
Murray

is this the same one that worked with WP 2.3.3, which I am still running?
@Alice - the difference is, Blogrush is a widget, not a plugin…2 different scenarios.
Yes, widgets “kill” whatever else is in the sidebar unless it is other widgets…you will find widgets for all 3 of the things you mentioned on the bottom of your widget page in admin…install those and it should work fine.
It freaked me out the first time also
