Humanscale Freedom: My New Office Chair

Humanscale Freedom Chair - Saddle SeatEver since my car accident in late August, I’d been having trouble sitting in my standard office chair for more than about 20 minutes before my back and shoulders would start to ache.

Considering I like to put LOTS of time in at the computer when I’m working, so I can take LOTS of vacation time when I’m not, I had to rectify the problem ASAP.

The solution came from Gabriel-Ross and their Humanscale Freedom Chair - Saddle Seat which comes with numerous frame, textile, caster and base color options. (I got the bright red one.)

The design forces you to keep your back straight when used properly — i.e. sitting in a ”saddle” posture, which lowers the thighs and puts the spine into a lordotic curve. Although I’ve caught myself using it like a standard stool, more often than not I’m using it properly now, and voila! no more back pain! Yee-ha!!

Another benefit of the ”saddle” posture is that it allows users to get closer to their work — which is great when your eye-sight is diminishing (no doubt due to too much work at the computer) and you refuse to wear reading glasses. I guess those will be the next purchase. :-)

You can see the chair in action in my Home Office Video.

How to Escape the Rat Race… Really

Above the desk in his home office my dad had a large sign - handwritten all in capital letters - that read ‘Work Smarter, NOT Harder‘.

Those words were etched in my mind as I was deciding what I wanted to do with my life, and early in the game I placed special emphasis on the ‘NOT harder’ portion of the equation.

Not harder meant less work and more time for fun.

That attitude, combined with a serious misinterpretation of my mother’s Clavinistic admonishment ‘you always do exactly as you please’ proved a great recipe for success…

Work less, do what you really want to do.

That’s what I’ve always done, and am still doing.

As a matter of fact, I write this on return from a 2-week vacation during which I spent less than one hour working on my business.

I wish more people would adopt that attitude and have more time to come out and play.

Can you come out and play? If you can’t remember your last vacation, are pining for your next vacation, or are chugging through the daily grind of a 9-5 job only to return home to put in another several hours at your computer building your Internet business, PLEASE do yourself a favor and keep reading Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere and Join the New Rich.

The Brain Dump

So, how was your Easter break?

Did you really enjoy yourself or did you find it difficult to step away from your computer and really relax?

If you’re like me, there may be times when you have so much on your plate that your mind just goes round and round — and you can’t stop thinking about all that you have to do.

Stuff like:

  • Get that newsletter written.
  • Revamp the autoresponder series.
  • Review those 10 new products!
  • Decide which products to promote.. and in what order.
  • Backup the computer.
  • Test the new software.
  • Approve the MySpace friend requests.
  • Review PPC campaigns.
  • Etc., etc., and etc.

Blah, blah, blah and on it goes. Where she stops, no one knows.

Actually, it’s essential that you do quiet the incessant inner chatter if you want to improve your focus, do your best work and increase your productivity.

When I find that my mind is restless (or spinning out of control) with my To-Do list, I take a page out of John Reese’s book and do a ‘brain dump’.

It’s simple. (For those who are kept awake at night thinking about their to-do list, this technique is especially effective.)

Grab a pen and paper and make a list of all the niggly tidbits that have been plaguing your brain over the last few days. When you’re finished writing, file the list where you can find it again but can’t see it from where you work.

Aaaaah, relief!

Now you can choose ONE task to work on without worrying about all the other items on your list. Oh sure, they’ll still be there when you check the list - but the good news is that they won’t pester you in the meantime.

Improve your productivity and ultimately, your income - do a ‘brain dump’!

An Easter Weekend Project

Many of you will take a 3 or 4-day break from work this weekend to celebrate Easter. If so, and you plan to spend lots of that time working on your web sites, I have the perfect Easter weekend ‘project’ for you…

Take a Break!

Stepping back from your business every now and again is a GOOD thing to do. (I know, as I take more breaks and vacations than anyone I know).

You definitely need a break if…

You spend so much time at the computer that your family misses you and complains about your absence. Or, if you feel frustrated or bogged down with how your business is progressing. Feeling that way actually causes you to lose focus and slows your progress.

When you step back and relax for awhile, you’ll find that you gain clarity, perspective and focus; and that makes everything about your business run more smoothly.

So, enjoy your weekend ‘project’ and have a Happy Easter!

P.S. OK, if you absolutely MUST get to your computer this weekend, then sign up for the year’s free hosting deal I got for you and start thinking (only thinking) about how you’ll put that new domain to good use. :-)
