Happy 2008 and Happy Anniversary!

Well, here it is, 2008 already.

Although I’m always amazed at how quickly the time flies from one year to the next, I’m particularly amazed that this January 1st, I’m celebrating the 10th anniversary of doing business online.

Yes, it was 10 years ago today, during a very early morning chat room session, that I decided to start my dating service review site, Sage-Hearts.com, which was supposed to make the Internet a better, more enjoyable place for singles looking for partners online.

I registered the domain name on January 7th, 1998 and received my first affiliate commission check for $10.99 early in February 1998. Talk about excited… I could barely contain my glee when that check arrived in the mail.

Alot of checks have since arrived and although I may no longer jump for joy when they come in, the game of making money online is still as much fun as it ever was — especially when I’m in the process of spending the proceeds while travelling and then making even more when I’m travel blogging. Who woulda thunk it, eh? :-)

My greatest enjoyment however, has always come from helping others… whether it be in their pursuit of a partner, online business building, or other interests that we share. No check will ever compare with receiving an email or card that says ‘Thank You! You changed my life!’. That’s the truly fun and rewarding part of this business… big checks are just a very nice byproduct.

So, which business anniversary will you be celebrating in 2008?

Are you having fun doing business online and which aspects do you specifically enjoy? Do you like the day-to-day processes of the business itself, getting the checks in the mail or is it what you do with those checks that gives you the most pleasure?

Please share your experience to inspire others who may just be starting out or haven’t yet discovered the joys of Internet and Affiliate marketing.

Happy New Year!

Feel Like You’re Up Against a Brick Wall? Watch this Video

Do you sometimes feel like you’re up against a brick wall or have trouble taking action to accomplish your goals?

Then the video lecture I stumbled across online this morning (and then had the good fortune to see presented again on Oprah later in the day) will kick you into high gear.

The video is of Professor Randy Pausch, giving a ‘last lecture’ before a packed house at Carnegie Mellon University on September 18, 2007. “Last lecture” is apparently a common theme for college lecture series, in which professors deliver a hypothetical final talk about what they’ve learned and want most to impart to others..

Randy Paush’s talk wasn’t hypothetical however, he is dying of pancreatic cancer.

During his talk entitled “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams,” Pausch discussed his lessons learned and shared advice with the attendees on how to achieve their own career and personal goals.

Seriously, if you do nothing else today, watch this video. It is brilliant, inspirational and to the point. And if you really do feel like you’re up against a brick wall, take special note of what Dr. Paush has to say about why those brick walls are there in the first place… it should give you insight into how to break them down.

The YouTube version posted below is just shy of 10 minutes in length. If you would like to see the whole lecture (1 hr. 44 mins), it is available here on Google Video.

Jack: My Biggest and Littlest Fan :-)

This is SO sweet.

My Google Alerts led me to Shawn Collin’s (co-founder of Affiliate Summit) Affiliate Tip blog entry titled “Rosalind Gardner’s Biggest Fan” where I found this picture of his son Jack, perusing the Super Affiliate Handbook.

Shawn makes the comment “… it never fails. He passes by Seth Godin, Malcolm Gladwell, Jay Conrad Levinson, Frank Luntz, Robert Cialdini, John Caples and all the rest. Always straight to Ros.

Well Shawn, I’m honored to know that you have my book on your shelf and delighted to see that you’re teaching your kids right and giving them a great leg up in the affiliate marketing world.

Too, Jack may be my biggest fan, but he’s also my cutest fan! :-)

Have you ever wished you could change the world in such a phenomenal way that you’d be remembered for your significant contribution? With the horrors in Iraq, the genocide in Africa, and the world’s troops struggling to restore order so they can just get back home to their loved ones, some friends of mine decided to do something exceptional.

I was so impressed with their vision that I immediately joined their worldwide campaign, and I think you will too!

Leavin’ on a Jet Plane

Hurray! Ed and I are just about to leave the house for a long-awaited trip to Malaysia and Vietnam.

Adventure right along with us over at Roamsters.com… and never fear - there will still be lots of affiliate marketing news and tips on NPT, even while I’m building sand castles on the beach in Borneo. AMAZING how that works. :-)

Airport Security Killed My VAIO!

VAIO SZ Series Notebook VGN-SZ650N/CMan, was I choked when I realized that the airport security staff at Toronto International airport broke my Sony VAIO laptop when we were returning home after Christmas. Here’s what happened…

At the xray, I’d placed my winter coat and purse into one tray and my laptop in another. When I remembered that I would also have to put my suit jacket through the xray there were no more trays available, so I placed the jacket under the laptop.

BIG mistake! Read more

I Took a Break Today

After I wrote one newsletter, queued up 5 blog posts, wrote more specifications for the developers of my software project, consulted with a partner on an ongoing project via Google talk, consulted with another partner about a planned project via email , read through dozens of email, processed the day’s checks and did some affiliate marketing research - when the snow started coming down in HUGE “Toronto-type” flakes this afternoon, I just HAD to take a break and build this snowman. :-)
