Why I Bought Joel Comm’s Instant Resale Templates

No doubt you’ve heard all the hullaboo going on about Joel Comm’s Instant Resale Templates since its launch on the 1st of May.

Well, I just ordered a copy this morning and here’s why.

  • 306 Basic Templates (with Resale Rights) $297.00
  • 80 WordPress Themes (with Resale Rights) $100.00
  • 76 Photoshop Templates (with Resale Rights) $199.00

  • 44 Newsletter Templates (with Resale Rights) $100.00
  • 300 Website Buttons (with Resale Rights) $100.00
  • 45 Extra Header Templates (with Resale Rights) $100.00

The amounts listed represent the approximate value of each component and in my experience, many of those are low.

For example, Joel includes 500 New PLR Articles which he values at $3,000.00. I don’t know where he gets good articles for $6 a pop, because in my experience it costs at least $10 to get a ghostwriter to write a semi-decent article and then you still have to do some rewriting to make the article presentable.

Too, I’ve spent $250 and more for developer editions of Wordpress templates, which includes a licence that allows me to use the template on more than one site. Joel values his Wordpress templates at $25 each and not only can you use them more than once, you can resell them.

I’ve paid more than twice as much as Joel is selling the whole Instant Resale Templates package for, AND it includes resale rights… AND there’s a whole lot to be made in reselling ‘chunks’ of a package.

All in all, I thought it was a great deal and will be even after the price goes up later on today. (See note below).

Check out Instant Resale Templates now.

NOTE: OTHER affiliates are selling the package for more, but I got a special link from Joel, so YOU can still get it for the original price $97.00. :-)

Blogging for Change

Penticton Baseball Diamond (12)No… “blogging for change” doesn’t mean blogging for pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.

By ‘change’, I mean using your blog to make things happen!

Case in point.

On Earth Day night, I couldn’t help but notice the ugly glare from the HUGE lamp standards at our local baseball field than burned for hours on end while no one played… AGAIN.

As a local taxpayer and someone concerned about the environmental damage caused by wasteful energy usage (not to mention how we should be conserving every precious kilowatt), I had already phoned City Hall about the issue.

However, despite assurances to the contrary — nothing happened.

So, that night I took photographic evidence of the bright empty field, uploaded the pics to Flickr and then blogged my utter disgust in a post at Roamsters.

What do you think happened when I phoned City Hall the second time and said “Oh and by the way, if you Blog search Google, you’ll see a blog post entitled “Wasting Energy: How Penticton Celebrates Earth Day” right at the top of the listings?

You’re right! Changes started to happen the very next day!

The Parks guys programmed the system so the lights turned off at 10PM the following night, rather than 10:30PM. A couple of nights later, one of the Parks guys went out to the field on his own time and seeing that is was empty, turned the lights off at 9PM.

A couple of days after that a switch was installed at the field so the lights will only work when the team is there and actively turns the lights on and a discussion was held with the local baseball league to inform them of their responsibility to turn the lights OFF when they leave.

And best of all (from my selfish perspective), a Parks rep visited our home and a link to the blog post was sent to the company that installed the lights. By result, in the next few days the company will adjust them downwards to reduce the glare from our (dis)advantage point.

How’s that for effective blogging? :-)

For me personally, the effect is hugely satisfying… moreso even than if I’d made a pot full of money blogging about something else. It feels really good to be able to effect quick change on a level that benefits both my community’s environment and budget.

Would the response have been as quick if I’d said, “go take a look at my website” instead of “blog search Google”?

Based on previous experience, I don’t think so. I believe the quick response was by and large a result of how effective blogs are in scoring points with Google.

And I’m sure I’ll have opportunity to test that theory sometime in the not-too-distant future… but next time I’ll upload video to YouTube! :-)

Fresh News Theme by Adii

Pictured below is the Fresh News Theme most recently released by Adii of Premium News Themes.

Nice, huh?

The Fresh News was designed and coded by Magnus Jepson. You’ll notice some similiarities between this and Adii’s other themes as it was built on the framework of previous Premium News themes.

Adii has included 6 color schemes with the theme, including:

  • Default (shown above)
  • Brownie
  • Grey
  • Ice Blue
  • Simply Red
  • Whitey
  • Cool Blue
  • BlacknBlue

They’ve also included a standard blog layout template that will make your homepage look like a traditional blog without losing any of the functions and features built into the themes. All that is required to switch between the 2 looks is selecting the appropriate option.

I use the Premium News theme on RosalindGardner.com (ignore the wonky search button - I was playing around with the CSS and haven’t gotten around to fixing it yet) and what I especially appreciate about these themes is that features such as Flickr, Feedburner and banner ad management are integrated.

To see all else that is included with these themes, visit Premium News.

Note: The link above will take you to a purchase page. To see the Fresh News theme in action, click on ‘Info about this theme’ in the right sidebar and then any of the linked color schemes. (Guess I’m gonna have to talk to that boy about visitor and affiliate friendly site navigation, huh?) :-)

Blogging is a “Massive Mistake”… HUH?

My jaw dropped as I saw the subject line of an email sent out by Ken Evoy last week which read:

Why Blogging Is A Massive Mistake!

HUH?

At one point Ken states “Blogging has reached lemming status. Without even thinking, many small businesses equate blogging with having a Web site“.

Sure, call me and the 112.8 million other bloggers out there ‘lemmings’, but at least we know that a blog IS a web site. Moreover, a blog is a web site that is built to find and deliver search engine traffic… immediately.

Ping - ping - PING!

For those who haven’t started blogging yet - a Wordpress blog is a site-building platform and content management system with an online publishing interface. And because Wordpress is distributed under an open source license called the GNU General Public License, it’s distributed free of charge.

Better yet, easy-to-install (or auto-install) widgets and plugins are regularly developed for Wordpress by legions of progammer/user/contributors who see ways to enhance the software’s already stellar functionality.

By the way, those widgets are also free of charge.

Ken also wrote that blogging is:

…obviously wrong for small businesses with something to sell” and is “also the wrong choice for infopreneurs (ex., those who earn affiliate and AdSense income, without selling anything directly to customers).

Are You Losing Money Due to Slow Page Loads?

Look at the image on the left.

That’s what I got to look at for 24 seconds while waiting for a popular blogger’s site to load.

UGGGGGHHHHH!

And no, it’s not a slow connection on my end — almost every other site I visit loads instantly. What’s worse - every page on this blog takes as long or longer to load… every single time.

Now, the only reason that I bother waiting for this site to load is because I know and enjoy this blogger’s work. He shares all manner of valuable tips, interesting anecdotes and personal stories on his blog.

I don’t mind the wait because I know it’s coming. I do some other work on my computer and when I see his favicon come up on the tab in Explorer, I know that page has finally loaded and is available for viewing.

That works for me, but what about first-time visitors to his site? Do you think they bother waiting nearly half a minute for a page to load. Some might, but MOST definitely will NOT… which means that he’s not making nearly as much money from his blog as he could.

So why does his blog load SO painfully slow when others load instantly?

Well, in a nutshell… he’s got too much ’stuff’ (that’s put nicely) going on.

  • On a single page you’ll see ads, ads and more ads. He’s got Kontera, Chitika, ReviewMe, Peel away ads, top of page ad bars, one or more 468×60’s banners, at least ten 125 x 125 banner ads — many of which contain Flash.
  • His standard top of page navigation is heavily graphic-laden and takes up everything above the fold.
  • He obviously runs a ton of Wordpress plugins and there is a TON of javascript code running on each page which is notorious for slowing sites down when scripts from different programs conflict.
  • Instead of linking to one primary stylesheet, the CSS code has been built into his header.php, which adds approximately 3000 unecessary characters to each and every page.

UGGGGGHHHH again. Mostly unecessary and a total waste of good traffic.

So, what can you do if your site is loading slower than you would prefer?

The answer is simple — lighten up!! Here are a few easy ways to do that:

  • Reduce the number of graphic images that you use on your blog and that includes banner ads.
  • Decrease the color depth of your own images to 256 and make them as small as possible.
  • Test your site for loading after installing any new plugin or javascript widget.
  • Consider whether you really need to put your Flickr album and broadcast all your Twitter tweets in your sidebar or whether having a link to those accounts would accomplish the same goal.

If those simple tweaks don’t solve your page load issues, or you’re not a geek / technically inclined, hire a programmer at RentaCoder to help solve the problem.

Bottom line — when people can’t see your site due to slow page loads, you’re killing your bottom line.

Not All Bloggers are Thrilled with Wordpress 2.5

Over on the Upgrading Wordpress with Fantastico post Francois asked “Do you think it is really necessary to upgrade in the first place?

Well, the short response is that after reading a number of posts from webmasters who have done the Wordpress 2.5 upgrade, I’m more inclined to believe that my penchant for keeping things simple really pays off. (Although I’m already using WP 2.5 on a couple of smaller, very simple blogs; I haven’t yet updated my larger blogs such as NPT).

WebBlogToolsCollection has posted a FAQ on Wordpress 2.5 that answers a big whack of questions about the new version, and many of the 67 commentors to date have added still more questions to the already sizeable list.

The biggest complaint around the blogosphere seems to be that the widgets don’t work for some bloggers who use multiple column templates. One might assume that they are using templates not yet verified as being compatible with WP 2.5. However, even templates that were listed as compatible on the Wordpress site were later discovered not to work completely with the latest version.

Ergo, my statement about simplicity above. I don’t bother using widgetized sidebars and prefer instead to hardcode elements so that they will work regardless of template compatibility… and goodness knows that I like to tinker with templates! :-)

So, to answer your question, Francois — if you are uncertain about whether or not you should upgrade at this point, it’s probably best to wait — especially if you’re not big into tweaking and want something that works ‘out of the box’.

Here’s some sage advice that Jon of Ninja Blog Setup left as a comment on the earlier post:

For major upgrades, like the one just released from 2.3.3 to 2.5 it is advisable to wait a couple weeks to allow plugin authors a chance to test and revise any problems in their plugins, but with minor upgrades, like from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3, which are often security related, these should be done ASAP and the Instant Upgrade plugin works fantastically.

Hope that helps!
