Grumpy and HoundHunt: Learn and Be Inspired
The GrumpyOldMan (his real forum nickname) has returned to the NPT Forum and I’m thrilled. In his most recent post, he tells us how it’s been a year and how he’s ‘followed all the advice given’ regarding selling his Clickbank products.
Well, I gotta tell ya, as I see it, that ain’t the case. So, to answer his and a few other questions that I received regarding selling Clickbank products this week, I posted 2 articles.
The first is an article that was published in Revenue magazine called “How to Get Super Affiliates to Join Your Program and Promote Your Products“.
The second is specific to Clickbank merchants and titled “15 Ways to Sell More of Your Products on Clickbank“.
Speaking of the NPT Forum, we have 2 new moderators this week, Jim Hutchinson and Griff Grumbein. Both have been uber-active members of the Forum since joining and have a wealth of knowledge to share with newbie and advanced marketers alike. Look for their names along with Brad Haslam and Lowell Reiger if you are looking for answers to your internet and affiliate marketing questions.
This is especially pertinent now as our Support Desk is down. Don’t ask me why… I have no clue. Weirder than weird, but considering we planned to move all general questions to the Forum anyway, perhaps it’s good timing… or karma?
Lastly, I would like you to look at HoundHunt’s forum post. He says “I purchased the Handbook a little over a week ago, and have been working day & night, especially once I followed advice and started a blog ( which I knew nothing about ) and built it live, since I didn’t know how not too.. accomplished in just a week“.
I checked out his site and was delighted, surprised, amazed even…
That’s it for now. I have to get out and help move a mountain of bark mulch from the driveway to the newly landscaped garden area before our Canada Day Eve party on the 30th. I’ll post pics of both next week.
In the meantime, learn from the GrumpyOldMan and be inspired by HoundHunt and I hope you have a super prosperous week… and a very Happy Canada Day and 4th of July. Woohoooooo!

Trackback Spam
One of our newest NPT Forum members, DLZ, discovered something odd in the moderation queue of his new blog and was wondering if he’d been spammed. This is the answer to his question.
If you’ve been blogging for more than a day or two, you’ve probably seen trackback requests in your Moderation Queue.
Provided that you’ve set your Discussion options to allow link notifications (pingbacks and trackbacks) from other blogs and require than an administrator always approve the comment, a Trackback request will show up in your Wordpress Moderation Queue when a blogger publishes an article on their blog that contains a link to your blog.
Trackback requests are differentiated from normal comments in the queue by square brackets enclosing 3 dots, eg. […], which are placed at both the beginning and end. The trackback consists of the title of the post, a link to the post, the site’s IP address and some of the commentary surrounding the part of the post that links to your blog… as shown in the graphic below.

You have the option to approve, spam, delete or defer moderation on the trackback until later. To decide whether you should approve, spam, or delete the trackback you’ll need to visit the blog from which the link originates.
My general rule of thumb for trackbacks is to approve them if the author has cited my work, provided proper attribution and added their own commentary on the subject matter.
For example, I heartily approved the trackback shown in the graphic below. Linda Buquet of 5 Star Affiliate Programs had found my “How Affiliate Marketing Works” video and blogged about it in a post entitled “How Affiliate Marketing Works - Great Video for Newbies“.
Not only does her post lend credence to my video, but the content on her blog is of value to my readers - those in interested in affiliate marketing - so of course I’m more than happy to share some linky love with Linda.

On the other hand, the trackback in the first graphic was not only deleted but marked as Spam.
Why?
Well, first of all, I would delete this trackback because this blogger’s post had nothing at all to do with the post on my blog to which he linked. He was talking about scam affiliate products with ‘bad ratings’ (whatever that means), picked up on my post about Affiliate Marketing with a Bad Credit Rating and apparently decided that the subject matter was what… close enough to be relevant? It was NOT in the least bit relevant and therefore patently obvious that the blogger linked to my post just for the sake of the trackback.
And although I could just delete the request, I chose to mark this trackback as Spam for the simple reason that this blogger has been consistently targeting my blog (and other’s) with spammy trackbacks.
Wordpress is smart.
Once a trackback from a particular blogger (IP address) is marked as spam, you won’t be bothered with having to moderate trackbacks in the queue from that blogger anymore. Their trackbacks will be sent to the Spam queue immediately where they will wait until you hit the ‘Delete All’ link and get rid of a couple hundred spam comments and trackbacks all in a single click. Killing that much spam should give you a nice little rush to boot.
The point is to set your discussion options so that all comments and trackbacks are moderated. Take time to evaluate the post from which the link originates and decide whether or not the content is worthy or just there for the sake of the link, i.e. spam.
Read about the trackback spam that DLZ found on his blog.

Affiliate Marketing with a Bad Credit Rating and more…
As the economy worsens and the price of basic goods continues to skyrocket, an increasing number of people are writing in to ask me whether it is feasible to do business as an affiliate marketer with a poor or bad credit rating.
The short answer is a big fat “YES!” and I’ve detailed some of the how-to’s and caveats in this week’s article “Can I Start an Affiliate Business with a Bad Credit Rating? “.
In conjunction with that article, I’ve also included some information about “credit cards for those with bad or no credit“.
A sampling of posts to the NPT Forum this week:
- Mark asks “should I start a debate forum?“
- NewMom0208 wonders “When is a website ready to start affiliating?” and about link cloaking.
- Ron wants to know if he’ll go to jail if he promotes…
- caseykt2008 struggles with GoDaddy’s Website Tonite program.
- NPT forum moderator extraordinaire, Griff, posted a poll about how you use Adsense.

Is Your Blog Featured On Facebook?
I submitted one of my blogs, FunnyVideooftheDay.net, and it’s already ranked in the top 20 within the humor category and the top three within the entertainment category.
The reason it’s ranking so high so quickly is because this is a feature on Facebook that’s just starting to take off. And, we all know that the best time to jump on any opportunity is at it’s infancy, right?
The way your site is ranked is by the number fans who have joined your blog within Facebook. To see how this works, visit this page for my blog and you can see how the application looks within your profile. Feel free to become a fan if you’d like, and you’ll see how the blog will then end up within the Blog Networks section of your profile.
To submit your blog, all you have to do is go to the Blog Networks section of Facebook and submit your blog. It’s that simple. We’re all here to get more traffic to our websites and blogs, and the Blog Networks section is one of those hidden gems that everyone with a blog should definitely take advantage of.
Good luck and happy bloggin’ and Facebookin’.
Jason.

Forget Affiliate Marketing: Earn 100% as a Reseller
OK, I don’t really mean that you should forget affiliate marketing forever and always. That would be bad.
I do however think you should consider yet another way to make money online that doesn’t require creating your own product - reselling.
Reselling consists of buying the resale rights to a product, then selling - or reselling - that product as a merchant. One of the biggest advantages to reselling is that as a reseller, you earn 100% of each sale you make. Read more

Weekly Recap: Twisted in Toronto
Well, just one more sleep until I’ll be on my way back Home Sweet Home and I’m thrilled.
While it’s wonderful to visit with friends and family here in Ontario, I can hardly wait to see my cat, my ‘western’ friends and my precious Desktop.
Here at my Mom’s place, I work from my laptop which is perched on an end table in the living room while sitting on a chair which is slightly askew to the table.
Working hunched over and twisted like a pretzel is hard on the old bod, which explains why I’ve barely blogged at all this week.
Fortunately, this week’s guest bloggers, Alexander Alaric and Malcolm Sheppard made excellent contributions.
If you too took a break from the web last week, here are the posts that have been made since my recap from Huntsville on May 28th:
- How to Connect with Influential People on Facebook
- Affiliates Can Make More Money with Amazon Unbox Video™ Referals in June
- Joint Ventures: An Ill-Conceived Proposal
- Five Tips to Make Your Blog More Sociable

How to Connect with Influential People on Facebook
This is the third in a series about social media marketing using Facebook by guest blogger, Alexander Alaric.
It’s great to have thousands and thousands of friends, but building a relationship with just one person who is highly influential in your market could be more valuable to you than all the rest of your Facebook friends put together.
To get these folks on board, start by making a list of between 30 to 50 of the top influencers in your market.
Keep in mind that these are busy people and that they have new people contacting them all the time who also want to use their expert power, so you will need to decide how you are going to set yourself apart from the crowd to get their attention and make them want to help you.
The easiest way to connect with these power brokers is to offer to do something for them first because this starts the ball rolling.
In simplest terms, “you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours”.
So when you help get the word out about their business or their product or give them a testimonial they will be more inclined to help you after you’ve done that for them.
Most people I see make the mistake of asking for something before first giving something.
Don’t make this mistake because getting them to accept your friend request is all you want to do righ now. Then you can deepen the connection with further communication and offers to assist them.
You do this because the power of your network can really be more important than the size of your network. As well the strength of the relationships you have with those people in your network can be far more powerful than the size of your network.
You can open the lines of communication by sending them an e-mail asking about their business, what they’re working on, or what you could do to help spread the word about their business.
You can also make a text post on their “wall”. This is something unique to facebook (myspace.com calls it ‘comments’) which allows you to post a text message on to their profile that they and anyone who views their profile will see.
There is now also a cool floating bar that hovers at the bottom of your screen when you’re logged in to facebook which tells you how many of your friends are currently online and gives you the opportunity to have a live text chat with them. So you can have an instant messenger type conversation with those big influencers when they’re online. Using this tool alone could be a great way for you to get your foot in the door with power brokers in your industry.
Do it today. Make your list of influential people in your market and start making friends in high places.
