My Favorite Business Model
If you’ve read my book, you know that my favorite affiliate business model is selling subscription memberships that pay commissions on a recurring basis.
Sage-Hearts.com is based almost exclusively on that model. Most of the programs that I promote pay 50% recurring commissions on dating service memberships - which most people maintain for around 5 months.
Given a choice between a one-time flat fee of 200% of the purchase price or a recurring commission of 25%, I’ll almost always choose the latter.
Why?

Avoid Mountains of Work - Get a CMS Sooner than Later
If you arrived here via NPT’s homepage today, you’ve already seen the site’s ‘new look’.
Granted, I didn’t change the design very much, but the ArticleLive back-end is absolutely b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l! Now I won’t have to revise and upload 100’s of HTML pages every time I make a change to the basic template - yee-ha!
When I told Anik Singal that I was going to a new CMS, he mentioned that he really liked the original NPT layout because it was ’so easy to find what you’re looking for’. Well, finding the information you want should now be even easier with well-defined categories, featured articles with links to related articles and reviews.
The only downside to changing over to ArticleLive was that I made it a D-I-Y project. Duh.
Ergo, not all of my 100’s of articles are in the database yet, and there may be linking problems from within some of the older articles (if you find an error, please be kind and let me know), but the essential articles are all there and I’ll go through them with a fine-tooth comb to make sure they’re up-to-date and linked to the most helpful resources.
So, words to the wise. Get a great CMS when when you start your site (not 5 years into it) and avoid a HUGE mountain of work later.
Anyway, now that I’ve scaled that mountain, it’s time for some R&R in the Rockies. Yee-HAAAAAA!

One Thing I Learned at Affiliate Summit
Anik Singal of Affiliate Classroom tagged 5 affiliate bloggers - Jeremy Palmer, Sam Harrelson, Shawn Collins, Heather Paulson and I - to blog about one thing that we learned at the last Affiliate Summit.
So here goes…
As often happens, my biggest takeaway from the Summit didn’t come during a presentation but from talking about affiliate marketing with many different affiliates who were attending the conference.
Too, it wasn’t a new lesson, but a lesson re-learned and further entrenched.
The lesson - in the form of a quote - “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.” - Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865)
The route affiliates take to become successful are as varied as the individuals themselves and doesn’t really matter. Whether one chooses blog content publishing, becomes an affiliate arbitrager (delivering traffic directly to their merchants via PPC) or focuses primarily on social network marketing; success is always a result of intense desire, focus and perserverance.
Talk with any successful affiliate marketer (any successful entrepeneur for that matter) and you’ll discover a person who loves doing what they do. They are passionate and their passion is infectious.
Speaking with them not only gives you ideas about things you can do to enhance your own business, but it stokes the internal fire into an inferno - which is what I love about attending industry conferences. Moreover, people who are passionate about their lives and what they do are just more fun to hang with.
So, as it goes with the meme game, I now tag the following nice folks:

Ros to Speak at 5th Annual Casino Affiliate Convention
I’ve just agreed to speak at the 5th Annual Casino Affiliate Convention to be held on August 27-28, 2007 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Montreal. (The pic was taken at the September 2006 Casino Affiliate Convention held in Vegas.)
My presentation topic is ‘Tips for Super Affiliates‘. Please note that as I do not work in the online gaming sector, this presentation will be of a more general nature, and therefore applicable to affiliates in all sectors.
That presentation will take place at 3:30 on Monday, August 27th. I will also participate in the ‘ADAM ANHANG MEMORIAL FINAL PANEL DEBATE (a.k.a.: The “Beer Session”)’ currently scheduled for Tuesday August 28th at 3:00 PM.
The Casino Affiliate Convention has a global focus on internet marketing for the affiliate marketing and online gaming industry. Attending will be executives from casinos, poker rooms, skill gaming, P2P, bingo, sports books, marketing firms, online casino executives, affiliate managers, affiliates and portal webmasters of both gaming and non-gaming related sites.

No Skype Promotions in Mainland China
Here is a portion of a note that I just got from the Skype Affiliate Team regarding promotions of their product to people in Mainland China.
“Due to legal reasons, affiliates are no longer authorised to promote Skype in Mainland China. It is with great regret that we request you to cease the promotion of Skype in this country, with immediate effect.
We will be honouring the 90-day cookie policy and will be awarding commission for all sales generated prior to today, 17 July 2007. Please ensure all banners, text links and ad campaigns are removed as soon as possible, as no commission will be awarded to sales generated from China after 31 July 2007.”
Interesting considering Skype reportedly had over 25 million Chinese users toward the end of 2006, and supposedly growing at 100,000 users a day.
Hmmm… but they didn’t explain reasons for the change.
Perhaps Skype can’t afford to pay the commissions? Hmmm…

Elance Improvements
If you’ve ever had trouble finding the right web site developer at Elance or outsourced a project through Elance and then found communications with your provider difficult, you’ll appreciate these recent changes to the Elance interface.
Provider Search - Improved search algorithms now provide a better combination of earnings, experience, feedback scores and skills for the specific service that buyers are looking for. New filtering and sort capabilities narrow down the results to match buyers with the right providers. The feedback display has also been simplified for easier viewing.
Provider Profile - New sections for skills and keywords and a dynamically updated section for past projects will highlight the focus of each provider. More contact information such as Instant Messenger and Skype ID’s will make it easier to connect with the provider you choose.
Last but not least, Elance is also now fully integrated with PayPal.

Revenue Magazine: Web 2.0 and More
I had hoped to pick up the latest issue of Revenue Magazine while at Affiliate Summit, but it hasn’t been published.
I then realized that I hadn’t yet mentioned the May/June issue which focuses on Web 2.0, going global, building (or killing) your reputation, brand recognition and more. In the regular departments, Mike Moran asks the question “Do you know enough about search spam to stay out of danger?” and I discuss affiliate recruitment in the Affiliate’s Corner column.
Did you get your copy? It is available as a digital version and here’s a special offer for affiliates only: Get 5 Issues For Only $19.99.
