Get a Tax Break - Promote the March of Dimes

Friday’s Kolimbo Merchant spotlight included the following new merchant notice:

We are offering you an opportunity to partner with March of Dimes for the health of the future, in return March of Dimes is willing to acknowledge you as an affiliate partner, annual acknowledgements of donation that you can use as you see fit.

There ya go… but how do you decide? A nickel? Maybe 25 cents a click?

Hmmmm…..

If you are unfamiliar with the March of Dimes, here is their mission statement:

The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. We carry out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies’ lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birth weight.

Great cause.

However, animal lovers may wish to note that there are a number of worthwhile charities that do birth defect research WITHOUT animal testing, eg. Easter Seals , Birth Defect Research for Children and the Spina Bifida Association of America.

Just thought you’d like to know.

Cheers,
Ros

Ad_Word Analyzer version 3.0 Released

Ad_Word Analyzer version 3.0 was just released today! This is a MAJOR update.

We were discussing keyword and market research tools in the NPT Forum the other day and I talked about how I use Ad Word Analyzer. I’ve included those comments here.

There are so many good tools around, no wonder it’s hard to decide which ones to use!

I always start with Overture’s free keyword tool when I’m checking out markets.

I’ve also got a yearly subscription to Wordtracker.

Although I use other’s as well, I particularly like using Jeff Alderson’s Ad Word Analyzer. He’s just come out with version 3.0.

While Wordtracker gives me huge lists to work with, I find Ad Word Analyzer easier for getting a quick picture on the overall market.

In addition to building a list from the main keyword, it’ll also ‘drill down’ like Overture’s tool. In addition to the # of searches and results, it also displays KEI (the keyword effectiveness index), the ratio of searches to result.

Best of all it shows how many advertisers have campaigns at Overture and Google. When you click on one of those numbers, the software opens up a new window and presents you with a ‘competing list summary’.

By checking the URL’s in this list, it’s easy to see if there are affiliates advertising in the category. Essentially, THAT’s the kind of info you really want to know, ’cause where there are affiliates, there’s a huge likelihood that the niche will be profitable.

Here are Ad Word Analyzer’s new features:

- CPC (cost per click) data
- The estimated amount of clicks
- Advanced 8-option filtering system
- Ability to create your own custom filters
- Ability to save full Ad Word Analyzer reports

Dear Ms. Merchant

Dear Ms. BlahBlah.com Merchant,

I have a huge list of established customers with a demonstrated need for your company’s products. I therefore applied to your program through the Linkshare affiliate network on November 28th, 2005 while readying my sites for Christmas.

I could hardly contain my excitement therefore, when today, on January 17th, 2006, I saw in my Inbox :

“Subject: BlahBlah.com BlahBlah.com Application Approved”

WooHOO!

It was very heartening to learn that:

“BlahBlah’s commitment to providing premium quality BlahBlahproducts at or below published wholesale cost has made us one of Inc Magazine’s Top 500 fastest growing companies - 3 years in a row!”

The BlahBlah.com Affiliate Partner Program provides:
** BlahBlah.com is a Preferred Merchant of the LinkShare Affiliate Network - that ensures regular monthly payments, accurate tracking, and convenient reporting

Thanks especially for sending the following instructions along:

To get started, just follow the directions below:

  1. Go to http://www.linkshare.com) to log on to your account with your Username and Password.
  2. Click on “Create Links” on your main control panel
  3. Click on “BlahBlah.com”
  4. Select from the link types available to you from BlahBlah.com in the left frame tool bar
  5. Copy and paste the appropriate code into your Web site. Please allow up to 1 hour for the links to function accurately.

Actually, the following instructions would have been more helpful:

  1. Go to http://www.linkshare.com) to log on to your account with your Username and Password.
  2. Click on “Your Account” in the top navigation bar.
  3. Select BlahBlah.com in the Program Controls Merchant drop-down box.
  4. Click the “Delete this Merchant from my account” at the bottom of the page.

But no worries, I found what I was looking for - no problem.

Regarding “We’re sure you’ll find your partnership with BlahBlah.com most rewarding. Thank you for your particpation in our program.”

Well, you know where I went with that.

Actually, if you’d started with “I’m SO sorry! There’s absolutely no excuse for making you wait almost 2 months to have your application approved. On bended knee, I beg your forgiveness and am willing to offer you a 10% commission increase to promote BlahBlah.com’s products on your excellent sites”, I might have considered putting a BlahBlah.com link up in a dark corner of my site.

But as it stands, BlahBlah.com, you’re blacklisted. Consider yourselves lucky that I won’t publish BlahBlah.com’s real name on my blog.

Sincerely,
Rosalind Gardner

Gone in the Blink of an Eye!

An article published over at Nature.com confirms that we humans DO generally judge books, and web sites, by their covers.

Basically, first-time visitors arriving from search engine will decide in only 50 milliseconds whether or not your site is worth their time.

Here’s what Michael Hopkin had to report:

“Like the look of our website? Whatever the answer (and hopefully it was yes), the chances are you made your mind up within the first twentieth of a second. A study by researchers in Canada has shown that the snap decisions Internet users make about the quality of a web page have a lasting impact on their opinions.

We all know that first impressions count, but this study shows that the brain can make flash judgements almost as fast as the eye can take in the information. The discovery came as a surprise to some experts. “My colleagues believed it would be impossible to really see anything in less than 500 milliseconds,” says Gitte Lindgaard of Carleton University in Ottawa, who has published the research in the journal Behaviour and Information Technology1. Instead they found that impressions were made in the first 50 milliseconds of viewing.”

So, does your site suffer from long load times? Sick colors? Graphic mania? It might be time to read more…
