    Webmerge Revisited

This past week in the "Google is Your Friend" forum post, Johans made a reference to an article I wrote last February entitled "How to Build a 1,000-Page Content Site in Mere Seconds!", saying:

"Ros, wouldn't you agree that 1,000 page affiliate sites that are created in mere seconds qualify as the sort of crap that Google is trying to rid the web of? If so... why promote that trash?"

What he was calling 'trash' was the Webmerge software, which can take a merchant datafeed and produce thousands of pages in no time flat.

I had to agree that in that article I hadn't mentioned how important it is to add value to the pages that you create with WebMerge.

(Which surprised me considering the rant I've been on lately about 'good-for-nothing' affiliate sites...)

Regardless, I hardly think that the WebMerge software deserves to be called 'trash'.

The program can be used to build sites with spreadsheets and content that YOU create.

To give an example of what can be done, last week I built a spreadsheet listing all the infoproducts, software and services that I promote at NetProfitsToday.

I categorized each line item, wrote short descriptions for both the product and its subcategory, added my affiliate URL's and links to graphic images where they were available.

I used my standard template for NetProfitsToday, added some specific tags for Webmerge to be able to 'read' the data, then ran the spreadsheet/database through the program and built a new directory called 'marketing-tools'.

The beautiful thing is that when I want to add a tool to the directory now, all I'll have to do is add a row to my spreadsheet, re-build the pages and a new page will magically appear based on the name of the product.

Yes, Webmerge can be a little tricky to learn, especially if you're a beginner to HTML coding, but Richard Gaskin, the developer is very helpful, as is a fellow by the name of Frank Baer.

And no, it's not as efficient as having a web-based content management system, but it's still a great little tool for a one-time investment of ninety-nine bucks.

I'm not quite finished with the directory yet, as I plan to add descriptions to the top-level categories, beef up the current descriptions and add 'related categories', but you can see what I've accomplished so far at the NPT Marketing Tools directory.

    Promote and prosper!

    Cheers,
