What I Learned at 3AM this Morning...
Live and Learn... or in my case, live and learn and repeat
the lesson
numerous times before it sinks in.
My server went down yesterday, not once, but four
times.
Apparently it was down for a few hours before the
techs
re-booted it the first time.
This is a bummer because I send paid traffic to my sites,
24
hours a day, 7 days a week. It's a blessing that the failure
occured
during the middle of the night in North America,
meaning sales were down but
not completely out over the
course of the day.
What's the lesson? Don't wait for others to tell you
about
site outages... set your own domain as your
browser
homepage, or get a site monitoring service.
Speaking of the middle of the night ... after the
server
outages, I was REALLY happy to hear my business line ring
3
times at 3AM last night. I let it go the first 2 times,
hoping
'Whoever' would leave a message.
Wrong.
And you'd think 'Whoever' would apologize after learning
they'd just woken you up.
Wrong.
I asked him to call back in six hours, but 'Whoever'
suggested that
because I was already awake, I could help
him immediately.
WRONG!
I might as well have indulged him however. As it was, I lay
awake with
new site ideas dancing around in my head for the
next two
hours.
I also thought of a way to help folks avoid having to read -
especially
critical information about appropriate hours to
phone.
*Note: In the NPC Last week I talked about the importance
of
reading your email from merchant partners so as not to
miss
critical information that might result in lost revenue.
Well, my 3AM wake-up call, reminded me that I'm not the only
one
who doesn't always read ... even the BOLD print.
