Article: Jim Daniel's Favorite PC Apps
Ros' Ramblings
You may be amazed to know that not every helpful tool online
costs a
fortune - or even needs to cost you anything at all!
In today's issue of the NPC, Jim Daniels has kindly agreed
to share his
list of 10 favorite PC applications, all of
which are free.
I confess that I was unfamiliar with six of them!
Which brings me to a point.. if you know of a really cool tool
to share
with other webmasters, please do drop me a line
and tell me about it, so that
I can share it with everyone.
It's just good karma. :-)

Article: Jim Daniel's Favorite PC Apps
I'd like to share with you my 10 favorite time-saving tools.
No, these are
not affiliate links, they are just a handful
of slick apps that reside on my
own PC. They all save me
lots of time and money on a daily basis.
Perhaps you'll find a tool that will help you.
AuctionSentry
http://auctionsentry.com/
Whether you
are a buyer or a seller, this clever tool can
streamline and automate your
eBay auctions. It automates
bidding by placing your bid as close to the end
of the
auction as possible (referred to as "sniping"). Your
auctions are
displayed in a color-coded grid, indicating
which auctions you are winning,
which you have been out-bid
on, and which you have set up a snipe bid for.
Definitely
worth downloading if you frequent Ebay like I do!
Google Toolbar
http://toolbar.google.com/
When the
free Google Toolbar is installed, it automatically
appears along with the
Internet Explorer toolbar. This means
you can quickly and easily use Google
to search from any
website location, without returning to the Google home
page
to begin another search. The new version also blocks popups
and
offers an auto-fill feature to fill out forms online.
It's a great time
saver. Oh yeah, and if you prefer Yahoo!
over Google, Yahoo! now offers a
free Yahoo! toolbar which
gives you one click access to your Yahoo email, a
popup
blocker and more.
KeyboardExpress
http://www.keyboardexpress.com/
Do
you answer a lot of email? Keyboard Express allows you to
record, key in, and
play back any set of keystrokes and
associate it with one of more than 450
different hot keys.
Eliminate the repetition of the same sets of keystrokes
in
word processors, email, and more. The program can create hot
keys for
standard email replies, URL's and forms. Keyboard
Express can even be
scheduled to check for email messages.
This program is such a powerful tool,
I don't know how I'd
get by without it.
PDF995
http://www.pdf995.com/
With
PDF995 you can easily create professional-quality
documents in the popular
PDF file format. Its easy-to-use
interface helps you to create PDF files by
simply selecting
the "print" command from any application. And best of
all,
it is free!
ScreenPrint32
http://www.screenprint32.com/
ScreenPrint32
allows you to print and/or capture to disk or
clipboard, the full desktop,
active window, predefined area,
or user selected area of the screen. It's
very useful when
compiling tutorials or web lessons. It lets you capture
a
screen area and paste directly into your documents. The
resulting images
may be saved to either GIF, BMP, JPG or PNG
formats.
SecondCopy
http://www.secondcopy.com/
There are
lots of backup utility programs available for
backing up data and I've tried
quite a few. But the one I
rely on daily is called Second Copy, and it
automates all my
backups completely. If your computer is not backing up
your
crucial data at night, this is a great way to make
that happen.
Sothink HTML Editor
http://www.sothink.com/htmleditor/index.htm
So
you have a nice new website template, but no way to
customize it? That is,
unless you want to shell out two
hundred bucks for a web editor program. In
steps Sothink,
with their powerful HTML editor you can get for... free.
It
packs almost as much power as the expensive programs
including html
mode, visual (WYSIWYG) mode, site preview and
upload. If you need a solid
website editor but don't have a
budget for the "big" programs, this may be
all you need and
more.
UltraEdit
http://www.ultraedit.com/
A great ASCII
based word processing program is a must for
anyone running an email list.
This program offers great
features for email newsletter publishers, including
a
spell-checker and the ability to set line width for easy
message reading
in all email programs.
WeatherBug
http://weatherbug.com/
Get neighborhood
weather conditions on your desktop. OK,
it's not business related, but it's
slick. A digital
thermometer sits in the corner of my PC so I always know
the
conditions outside. Forecast and weather alerts are always
at my
finger tips. Try this fun, free tool.
Window Washer
http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/windowwasher/index.php
Many
people don't realize that everything you do on your PC
can be traced:
documents you've used, pictures you've
viewed, Web sites you've visited.
These online tracks put
your privacy at risk and eat up valuable hard-drive
space.
You can take back your privacy and improve your
system's
performance by regularly cleaning your cache, cookies,
history,
recent documents list, and more with Window Washer.

Jim Daniels is the author of the immensely readable 'Make a
Living
Online', a REAL book that I purchased quite a few
years ago now, and
still ranks amongst the best guides to
eBusiness that I've ever
read.
His site is simply a five page guide to starting and growing
a business
online. If you're stuck for ideas or just plain
stuck, this site may be just
what you need.
Make a Living Online
BTW, at the end of the web-based guide, Jim offers his
personal
assistance. Whether you take him up on that offer
or not, (I did, by the
way!) do read the five web pages.
Within those pages the site reveals more
than many expensive
books reveal, about making a living online.
