Candy is Dandy

Around Valentine's Day back in 2004 I wrote an article for the NPT newsletter titled "Affiliating in the Season of Love".

The dating - singles - personals niche is great!

High commissions and helping people find love - what more could an affiliate want?

Well, actually one of the best things about the dating niche is the wide array of related products that you can sell to people who are looking for partners.

Now I don't know about you, but in addition to Cupid, love and romantic dinners; Valentine's Day always makes me think of candy.

That could be because I've been a candyholic for as long as I can remember.

I remember being overjoyed to find a 'bonus' dime in the couch cushion repository when I was around seven years old, and using it to buy a pack of Popeye candy cigarettes. (I wish I'd stuck to the candy variety!)

Some of my friends are candyholics as well.

Together, we can wax poetic over retro candy like Bazooka gum, licorice pipes, candy necklaces and SweetTarts.

As for Valentine's, it just wouldn't be the same without a good supply of candy hearts.

Then of course there are the chocaholics who knew the benefits of chocolate long before recent studies showed that an ounce of chocolate a day is a good way to add antioxidant flavonoids to your diet and reduces the risk for cardiovascular disease.

I heed the doctor's advice and savor a triangular wedge of Toblerone Swiss dark bittersweet chocolate with honey and almond nougat everyday.

I and my friends aren't the only candy and chocoholics out there.

Candy CrateWhen I did my first datafeed processing trial with Webmerge, I used the CandyCrate's datafeed to demonstrate what could be done with a datafeed and set up a very generic-looking demonstration folder.

What was surprising was the number of candy sales that were generated by that article.

It wasn't Valentine's and the visitors were Internet marketers!

As a matter of fact, that ugly little demo folder still makes regular sales, and up until now there's only ever been ONE link on the NPT pointing to those pages.

So, just imagine how much candy you could sell to visitors who were actually looking for candy - targetted CANDY traffic - on your own candy site.

Or, any other site where visitors might be interested in candy... which of course is just about everyone - everwhere!

Woohoo!

Candy is DEFINITELY dandy!

Candyholic? Want to start your OWN Candy Site?

Here's what I recommend:

  1. Register a candy-related domain name at GoDaddy.com.

  2. Set up hosting on a server with CPanel and Fantastico. I use and recommend Steve Hetrick's DataWebPro.

  3. Set up a WordPress blog. It's push-buttom simple when you use Fantastico.

  4. Sign up for candy affiliate programs, preferably those with datafeeds. CandyCrate is a ShareaSale merchant.

  5. Use RSS2Blog to make post-dated entries to your blog from a candy merchant's datafeed.

  6. Use Webmerge to create a Candy catalog in a directory on your site. (If you don't want or like to use datafeeds, see the "Lots of products to list but don't want to use a datafeed?" section below.)

  7. In addition to the RSS2Blog blog entries, make additional posts to your blog and wax poetic over your favorite candy varieties.

After you've got that done, you can buy candy on your own site at a discount!

Lots of products to list but don't want to use a datafeed?

ShareaSale merchants who have product level links offer the "Make A Page" feature which generates HTML pages with individual product links.

You simply go into the ShareaSale interface and select the merchant, category of product, the width of your page, how many items per row and how many total items you want to place on each page.

Click 'view results' and the interface spits out the HTML code for you to copy and paste into your own template.

Here is an example from CandyCrate.
